NO NO, when you take off that nut the strut piston is going to slide down inside the strut until the ridge on the strut hits the opening but this is after it has fallen in so far that you will have to take the suspension out again to put the nut back on. i did this once, i started tightending the nut the wrong way and ended up loosening it cause i wasnt paying attention and before i could grab it it slowly slid down and i had to remove it all. but no, the washer isnt necessary. you could put it in just be sure to hold onto the piston when you take the nut off
