1875, Adding Washer at Top of Shock assembly? Posted by eclipse804, Apr-19-01 06:50 PM I just realized I forgot to put the washer at the top of the shock assembly when installing the skunk2 coilovers. In the engine bay, you can see the nut and there is supposed to be a washer beneath the nut. Is it necessary? My main question is, can I take off this nut and add a washer without removing any of the assembly from my car? Or will the whole assembly pop upwards once I loosen that nut. Thanks. | |

Posted by cyan, Apr-20-01 04:19 PM NO NO, when you take off that nut the strut piston is going to slide down inside the strut until the ridge on the strut hits the opening but this is after it has fallen in so far that you will have to take the suspension out again to put the nut back on. i did this once, i started tightending the nut the wrong way and ended up loosening it cause i wasnt paying attention and before i could grab it it slowly slid down and i had to remove it all. but no, the washer isnt necessary. you could put it in just be sure to hold onto the piston when you take the nut off | |

I guess I'll just leave the washers off because its kinda hard to hold onto everything right? Especially when I'm trying to tighten the nut again. | |

1879, I wouldn't recommend that Posted by Kahn, Apr-22-01 10:23 AM That washer is there for a reason, your best bet is to get some of the locking pliers and lock it onto the top of the strut (you know where the threads end) you will need to do this anyways since it has a tendency to rotate anyways. Take out the whole strut assembly, take the nut off (Once it gets to the final few threads point it towards the ground while unscrewing cause the spring will 'shoot' off. Then put your washer on, and put the nut back on. Then re-install. Best thing you can do is do it right. The washer is there for one reason or another....know what I mean? :-) | |

I really don't want to take it apart after all that work. I figure that washer is just there to prevent stripping of the threads? Since the amount you turn down that nut can vary (you can have it down more or higher without any problem right - meaning the part that is sticking up above the nut can vary). Any suggestions? | |

1882, Get some pliers Posted by Kahn, Apr-23-01 03:48 AM Lock them onto the flat part, and release the nut, it will not slide down that fast unless your strut is completely blown (mind didn't slide at all) then - take the nut off while holding the threaded part, then put the washer in there, then put the nut back on, then clamp the pliers on again cause it rotates, and tighten it down all the way - it will bottom out after a little bit. Need further help - look at corbin's page, its under mods on www.2gnt.com - it will take you a total of 5 minutes - go out and try it then report back when you have it done. Good luck. | |
