#1875, "Adding Washer at Top of Shock assembly?"

I just realized I forgot to put the washer at the top of the shock assembly when installing the skunk2 coilovers. In the engine bay, you can see the nut and there is supposed to be a washer beneath the nut. Is it necessary? My main question is, can I take off this nut and add a washer without removing any of the assembly from my car? Or will the whole assembly pop upwards once I loosen that nut. Thanks.
