And how would you say you would do that on a campus of over 20k people where most of the students were on their way into class at the time.
And if you did manage to get the message out and told people to stay put and not walk out, would that not just create the same scene in a different location?

As for the whole gun argument, I pose the same question, how do you enforce a no gun policy in an open campus. Sure you can put metal detectors in the few dorms, and then what? not like its too hard hide a weapon. The problem is the ease with which anyone can get a weapon, seems like all that is check is your criminal record. "Looks like your are clean! Well here is your gun son, Enjoy!"

Even with a more through gun check process, or gun banning procedures events like these will still be extrememly hard to prevent.
