Why don't you try harder to take a look at what's rubbing/banging first. It's gotta be something simple. This is a common setup.

Try jacking the car up, and shaking the wheel down, and shaking the strut, maybe something is just loose. You didn't forget the dust boots did you? They have an important washer in them you need.
