SPL (Sound Pressure Level, in dB) = 20 log p/p0 where p0 = 2x10^-5 n/m^2

Solving for 1200W peak at 99dB/w/m sensitivity:
20 log (1200*.99 / .00002)
= 20 log 59400000
= 155.5db SPL

... since two equal sources produce a 3dB increase in SPL (assuming no interference), you would need three of these Orion spekers to achieve 161.5dB or two to achieve 158.5dB.

So you're both almost right, altho I think you'd be better off advertising it as a 150dB speaker emoji

HEHE, you guys say what you want but... I've got 2 recorded slips showing runs of 161.1 and 161.4, each was done outlaw and not dash. That was with 4 Memphis 1000Ds, 2 on each coil. Anyone close to Columbia, S.C, I will gladly meet you and a shop of your choice, with a meter of your choice, and show you actual numbers.

Oh Yeah, and the 1200W peak power, your pulling those numbers from ORION's site? They under-rate all of their equipment, call ORION and get the real specs on the HCCA 15D. 1800W RMS w/ peaks of 3800W. That's been tested and recorded also. I was once sponsored by ORION, like I said those are coming straight from them, not here-say or he said she said.

appologies my friend.. sounds like one hell of a sub. How does it compare to a JL audio 13" W7? I was goin to buy on of those. Also, what is this custom box you have? is it fiberglass or what? If it's fiberglass and it fits in the spare tire compartment, i'll prob take it. Also, what are the specs for the recommedend enclosure size?

I can't seem to find it listed on orion's website.. what is the exact model number and how long have you had it?

Anyone know anyone who can help me tune this in the Pittsburgh area (Greensburg)?

From what I have found so far, it looks like these speakers need a big box (3-4 cu ft per sub). That's the same prob I had with my cerwin vega's. I want a small hidden box (JL Audio are perfect for this 1.5-2 cu ft). I dunno.. they are damn expensive tho.

The speaker enclosure is about 1.4 cubic feet, tuned to a ORION specified 32Hz. The box itself is made of 1 1/2" Thick MDF with dual 6" ports facing upwards. As of 2003, ORION quit making the 15D, they only make 10" and 12" sizes now, that's probaly why your having trouble finding stuff from them now.

It easily out-performs the W3's, I've actually outran 2 new W7s with this one speaker. The speaker itself weighs 68lbs, that's not including the weight of the box. If your wondering why the box is so thick, it was first made of 3/4" MDF but that lasted less than 3 mintutes before it literally broke apart from the power of the speaker. The 1 1/2" MDF is the only soze that will hold the speaker and handle the power.

I've got pics of the speaker and box is your interested in actually seeing it.

send pics to compcentral@netzero.net. What are the box dimensions?

Also, I have a poweracoustik 1800W (peak) 2 ch amp. Do you think this will feed it enough power? I'll have an optima battery (soon I hope) and a 1.5F cap. I'll run 4 gauge to the amp (and maybe use a 2nd backup battery for added power). I have an UDP so I hope my alternator can keep up.

Anyone know anyone who can help me tune this in the Pittsburgh area (Greensburg)?

You've got mail and pics!! That amp should be able to push it pretty good, as long you can bridge it and squeeze all that power out of it. If it will run a 1 ohm load, that's even better. Remember, I ran as much as 4000W peak to it, and was running 2000W RMS, 1800W peak will still make it rock. Your electrical will have no problems, I had 6 12s, 4 amps, and 2 batteries... so your cool.
