BUMP - Head will be sold by Christmas. Who will be the new owner?
Fully Built 2GNT Race Head
This is a true race head for the 2GNTer. Bolt this head to your 420A bottom end and you will feel a big difference. I have no dyno or track numbers to go with this head, but on a 10.5:1CR bottom end, stock cam gears, and an AFX/R ECU, the car was still pulling when the ignition cut hit at 8000rpm. Compare the build list, below, to that of current all motor record holder for both power and E.T. and you will find this head is solid. It's a real contender in the right hands.
Daily driving requires only marginal, if any, adjustments to driving style. Power below 3000rpm is adequate, but you won't spend a lot of time there with this on your engine - maybe in parking lots or drive-thrus. The last real miles put on this engine were in the last two weeks of December 2006, when Vanessa and I drove it from Phoenix to Kansas City and back. Rain, sleet, freezing rain, and snow - Daisy took it all in stride and still got upwards of 450 miles on a tank of 91 octane, completely untuned.
Cross 4000rpm, however, and this head wakes up every mod you've installed under the hood. The intake howls. The exhaust screams. It's a beast. My ex-wife once told me that she didn't like going places in the Talon, not so much because it didn't have power windows or locks, but because it was "Too cold. It's like a machine instead of a car." Welcome to the machine...
Features:
- Crower Valve Springs ---These cams require upgraded valve springs and I chose to stick with Crower in that area as well.
- Crower Titanium Valve Spring Retainers ---These serve to reduce weight in the valve train, which allows the valves to react quicker than they would with stock retainers. Compared to the stock retainers, the Crower Titanium units weigh as much as a single stock retainer and they're stronger to boot.
- SI Stainless Valves (I/E), 1mm Oversized w/ 5 Angle ---Oversized valves all around like this does result in a degree of reduced intake and exhaust gas velocities below 3000rpm, affecting low end torque but the design is to make mid- to top-end power with this head. A full radius valve job might have been the ultimate in valve jobs for this head, but I didn't feel the price being near double that of the five angle to be worth the gains above a five angle job.
- Fierro Racing Race Port ---Eddie Fierro has been specializing in small displacement engine headwork for many, many years and has been the only resource I have used for portwork on my engine - including the ported manifold and bored throttle body. He's one of the few vendors you will see doing serious headwork for the Neon community who hasn't screwed anyone either. His work is solid.
I began planning for this head something like three years ago. It took nearly a year of research and in-depth conversations with individuals well versed in all motor performance to develop the build of materials for this head. The goal at the time was no secret - to produce the most powerful, stock displacement all motor 2GNT in the country, which would hopefully translate into the fastest all motor 2GNT as well.
The car has never seen a dyno or drag strip any closer than the parking lot, but that's okay by me. It's safe to say this head has never been beat on. Sure, I've stretched it's legs a number of times, but most people who know me say I drive like an old man anyways, so it's been babied most of it's life and not seen it's full potential.
Worth Mentioning: Car has had a blown head gasket for a while (more than a year, actually), so this head will need to be milled for a new gasket, but that's about all a buyer would need to do aside from install the cam gears and bolt it to the engine. Head has been milled just once, so there is plenty of material left on it.
The only improvement I can think of for this head at the moment would be to replace the cam retainer cap screws with a set of ARP studs. I think that would bulletproof this thing. Otherwise, all you need are your choice of cams and gears.
I've got more than $2300 wrapped up in this project and I truly consider this head to be the heart and soul of my car. The gears are long gone and the cams will be going to their new owner within a week, but this is still a rock solid race head and I'm only entertaining offers above $1400. This is the sort of mod that restores your faith in the all motor game. This is what gives you that rumble at start up and gets the whole car shaking at idle. I've got filled/solid motor mounts in the car and, when sitting at a light, this guy makes it so I can barely see out any of my mirrors. She's civil when she has to be, but she's a screamer.
Ideally, the buyer of this head would have Megasquirt'n'Spark installed on their car along with this head and a well-balanced bottom end so they could wind her out to her limits. I suspect this head will deliver peak power between 7500-8500rpm, but the only way to know that would be to spin it up on the dyno with the ability to control fuel and ignition at that level.
The rest of the car is not for sale in any way. I'm almost scared to post this for fear that someone might actually have the money to buy it. It's awesome.
