Yep I've now had the 3 most popular forms of fuel managment for boost. The SFMU+30lb injects, the 8 injector setup, and now the Megasquirt setup. Without a doubt, the MS is the best way to go, but like said, its def not for everyone. There is a lot of tuning, and figuring out of variables and settings that can take some time, and of course full understanding of how it all works and functions, and how it effects the motor. I would say for anthing up to 15 psi, a SFMU and larger injectors would be the simplest setup, that's reliable, and easily "tuned". The biggest downfall of the SFMU setup, is ofcourse fine tuning. There is NO way to fine tune your fuel at a certain RPM or pressure under boost. There is some good torque to be made by fine tuning the boosted pressure vs RPM map for our motors..Unless you are serious about making power and ultimate fine tuning, then the SFMU setup is just fine.
The 8 injector/Portfueler setup is def much better than the SFMU setup, which now gives you more fine tuning under boost, pressure vs RPM. YOu can idle like stock, and drive like stock, and when under boost, you have full fuel control, to an extent..The downfall here is that the stock ECU is still controlling the primaries, which you have NO control over..Not a huge deal, but still not the best setup for the "serious tuners" out there. But the real worry I had about this setup, was having one of the secondary injectors fail, or clog..It would almost be impossible to diagnose right away, and could easily lead to engine failure. When an injector goes out or the like, when only running 4 injectors, its apparent almost right away.
Now from personal experience with the Megasquirt, this is by FAR, the best way to go for fine tuning, as its basically a standalone fuel/ignition system. But with this great tool, comes a lot of understanding, and knowing how it all works together. Its def not for the faint at heart..If you dont think you have the skill or aptitude to build/test/modify/and tune the MS, then you may want to choose the other options out there. You will just have to deal with the fact that you are missing out on some decent power gains without having full fuel and ignition control. The stock timing advance map only goes so far until you have to start pulling timing, or running higher octane fuel.
As an interesting side note, before with the 8 injector setup, I would get a second or two of detonation when downshifting from 5th to 4th at WOT at 15 psi...Now with the MS running fuel, this detonation is completely GONE. I now wonder if one of my 30lb secondaries was partially clogged or malfunctioning, causing a one cylinder lean condition, which was not decernable on the wideband o2 sensor at all..I'm running the same A/F as before with the 8 injector setup also. 13.5 @108 MPH-2.2 60ft(stupid FWD!)
