84935, Finally got the car running right!!!! Now, portefueler or megasquirt. Posted by Boossted420a2g, Apr-16-05 04:59 AM
Well, after hours and hours of trying to figure out my oil problems, my car is finally running correctly! But 7lbs just isnt enough for me so I am now going for a rebuild. But with my rebuild i am going to upgrade my fuel system. Im just not sure which one to use: the hahn portefueler or the megasquirt. What do you guys think?

I would say portfueler! I am in the same boat as you with 7psi just not being enough. From what I have read, the portfueler seems to be a more secure means for a fuel system. That is what I plan on going with myself!

Just use a Vortech S-FMU for up to 20 lbs. of boost.

Why not run megasquirt and be able to control ignition too?
Have as big of injectors as you want and have them able to idle properly and give fuel when needed throughout the entire rpm band? Cheaper solution and you dont have all the extra mechanical shit. With the portfucker you still have to tune their programs. Its ridiculous to me to even consider the portfucker....

Depends on how valuable your time is, how much you have to spend and how competent you are with a wrench/solding iron.

Portfueler without question.
Sure the Megasquirt can control timing, but so can an MSD box along with giving you better spark.
What happens if your megasquirt fails? No car to drive. I wonder how many people had their car towed while trying to figure out the megasquirt.

The MSD does not fully control timing... I've explained this to you before. The MSD can only retard timing based on RPM. You can also use the MSD with the Megasquirt for full control, multiple spark discharge, and capacitive discharge.

What happens if your factory ECU fails? What happens if a piston fails? What happens if a retainer/keeper fails? What happens if an injector fails? No car to drive. I don't modify my car based on "what if" logic... anything can fail.

:rolleyes
The portfueler sucks. It'd be my LAST option for fuel management.
Honestly, most of you guys don't need to get into digital programmable fuel and ignition management. Keep it simple, use an S-FMU or something similar unless you've got a "max effort" project on your hands.

Im just a simple man.
I like things that bolt on and work and that aren't complicated. Usually the simpler things are, the simpler they are to diagnose and fix.

Ok you guys have fun with your mechanical rise rate and half ass tuning. I'll take ONE product that will make my car more reliable at any boost level, and take comfort in knowing its running like a stock boosted motor. Giving the design what it demands and more as a fail safe.
Then have fun pushing the fucker to the limits :)

Then by all means do it. What some of us are saying is that some people have no business getting into stand alone EMS systems. They are just to stupid to do it or have no need to do it. If you're a moron or you are running low boost levels then just stick with an SFMU and it's supporting mods. But if the idiot thinks he can do it then let him I guess. Just another blown up 2GNT that's going to rot in a junkyard. Running something like that is a commitment and some people don't have the ability to do that. They got the car for dirt cheap or from a family member and just want it to go fast like they saw on F&F. I feel sorry for alot of 2GNT's that get put through that. Such a nice car with plenty of potential in the hands of an imbecile.
Edit: I'm not naming the topic starter in specific. Just the idea in general.

:rolleyes I'm not even going to respond to this. Honestly, man... it's clear to me that you have no real experience with this shit at all. Try giving advise about something that you actually know for a fact.

i will take a stock idle pressure without having to experiment on which ring to put in and which spring to use on a sfmu any day

Hows that the case? That was a general response. I have helped tune a megasquirt so I know its capabilities and I've ran with 1:1 and fmu, and then upgraded to sfmu. So you can take that no real experience and shove it up your ass....

:P You all bitch about having to swap rings and discs in the S-FMU but you're willing to tune several fuel and ignition maps on the MegaSquirt? Damn. Listen... the MS isn't for everyone, that's my only point. If you're gonna play with the big dogs though, you're gonna need an MS.

Yep :) I've now had the 3 most popular forms of fuel managment for boost. The SFMU+30lb injects, the 8 injector setup, and now the Megasquirt setup. Without a doubt, the MS is the best way to go, but like said, its def not for everyone. There is a lot of tuning, and figuring out of variables and settings that can take some time, and of course full understanding of how it all works and functions, and how it effects the motor. I would say for anthing up to 15 psi, a SFMU and larger injectors would be the simplest setup, that's reliable, and easily "tuned". The biggest downfall of the SFMU setup, is ofcourse fine tuning. There is NO way to fine tune your fuel at a certain RPM or pressure under boost. There is some good torque to be made by fine tuning the boosted pressure vs RPM map for our motors..Unless you are serious about making power and ultimate fine tuning, then the SFMU setup is just fine.
The 8 injector/Portfueler setup is def much better than the SFMU setup, which now gives you more fine tuning under boost, pressure vs RPM. YOu can idle like stock, and drive like stock, and when under boost, you have full fuel control, to an extent..The downfall here is that the stock ECU is still controlling the primaries, which you have NO control over..Not a huge deal, but still not the best setup for the "serious tuners" out there. But the real worry I had about this setup, was having one of the secondary injectors fail, or clog..It would almost be impossible to diagnose right away, and could easily lead to engine failure. When an injector goes out or the like, when only running 4 injectors, its apparent almost right away.
Now from personal experience with the Megasquirt, this is by FAR, the best way to go for fine tuning, as its basically a standalone fuel/ignition system. But with this great tool, comes a lot of understanding, and knowing how it all works together. Its def not for the faint at heart..If you dont think you have the skill or aptitude to build/test/modify/and tune the MS, then you may want to choose the other options out there. You will just have to deal with the fact that you are missing out on some decent power gains without having full fuel and ignition control. The stock timing advance map only goes so far until you have to start pulling timing, or running higher octane fuel.
As an interesting side note, before with the 8 injector setup, I would get a second or two of detonation when downshifting from 5th to 4th at WOT at 15 psi...Now with the MS running fuel, this detonation is completely GONE. I now wonder if one of my 30lb secondaries was partially clogged or malfunctioning, causing a one cylinder lean condition, which was not decernable on the wideband o2 sensor at all..I'm running the same A/F as before with the 8 injector setup also.

heh...YIKES! you think I should get them checked out and cleaned then Matt? And were's my test pipe?...damnit :P
As for the topic...it all depends on your power goals. For my semi long term goals the EIC will surfice quite nicely...but I can forsee going to the MS in a couple of years. But also for me I've been lucky with my finaces lately too...so a few hundred bucks here and there to try things out isn't too big of a deal...right now..LOL

I doubt that the detonation was from a clogged injector b/c some other guys using the 8-INJ setup were seeing the same detonation.

could that be from a delay between when you hit boost and when the extra injectors kick in?

hahn brags about this mystery fuel system for little over a year, they finally come out with it...and its an expensive knock off to what people have been doing with the 8 injector setup long before?
the sfmu is just another way of increasing fuel, it raises the pressures. however, im not even going to go into the reasons why i think this is retarded. it works yes, but so does driving on 4 donuts.
MS is not for everyone, but what it does do is give you a firm grasp on how fuel injection actually works and then it gives you something to apply it to, and then obviously reap the rewards of having a very nicely tuned car. knowledge, in my book...is WAY BETTER, than some bolt-on shit that just so happens to work.
MS all the way, personally i call it MS the 2gnt ECU v.2....and ive had quite experience tuning with it, at first...i was LOST...but then, it gets easier. just like really how anything is, you have to apply yourself...and MS really makes you do that.
/end rant

Yeah now that I think about it, soulcontroller has the same issue, and is still using the SFMU setup...I'm just now wondering if it has something to do with the stock fuel map at WOT..or some other variable with the stock ECU controlling fuel/ injector pulsewidth. Either way, it was nice to do a good 5th to 4th drop at 70 mph, and hit 15 psi without any detonation :)
Oh and Kent, I havent forgotten about you bro! I'll have the testpipe and motor mount all ready to go by the weekend..

Ofcoarse it does, the logic is based on natural aspiration.
