#5953, "RE: What's the difference between a Internal and External WG?" In response to Reply # 0

The biggest difference is that the external wastegate dumps exhaust air into the atmosphere from a small tube inside the engine bay. It makes a loud noise like a V8 engine when it dumps the air at full boost. It can be welded to the down pipe though. And the internal wastegate dumps the air inside of the exhaust. With the internal one you can hear the turbo spool up more. Either way who cares. Any waste gate is a good waste gate because if you have one that means you have a turbo. And turbos are GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An internal wastegate is integrated into the turbo. The wastegate actuator, compressor outlet for the actuator, piping, and dump are all part of the turbocharger itself.
An external wastegate Sits somewhere on the manifold and vents exhaust gas from there. It is connected to the turbo only by an actuator line.
Benefits: Internal: less parts to worry about. Cheaper. Simple. External: Higher flow, more customizable (change spring, etc.) and you can change the wastegate without changing the turbo. Most high end turbocharged systems (track cars) probably use externals.
