I accidentially toasted my 16G a few months back. I'm cheap, so I rebuilt the turbo myself with a HRC long rebuild kit. For those interested, here is the page that outlines the procedure:

You may also want to add in there that you should clean the shaft with Emry cloth, or FINE FINE Steel wool in order to make it completely smooth.
And having all the housings and the core glass-beaded by a local machine shop is a good idea, to remove all dirt, so that you do not contaminate the bearings and score them or the shaft.
Also, make sure you mark where the turbine is in relation to the compressor, and install it back on the SAME exact orintation or the turbos bearings will wear out quite quickly, because of an imbalanced rotational assembly.

Having Problems? Heres my Three step solution to anything 2gnt related. Step 1: Put down everything in your hands. Step 2: Grab a lucky strike, Smoke it. Step 3: Walk to the fridge, double fist some keystone ice, sit down in the shade, drink one beer, finish cigarette, drink other beer, roll a joint, smoke it, walk back to your problem, and in about 5 minutes the solution will come to you. If still nothing, your trying to hard. Start over at step 1.

I think the kit from Hahn was about $150. You have to call them to get pricing. There was some damage to my turbo and it failed again after a few months. I then had my turbo machined, rebuilt, and balanced for about $360 (I think it was Majestic Turbo). That was 10 months ago.

Thanks guys! I was hoping for a less expensive way to get mine to quit blowing oil. mine is new and has zero shaft play so I think that a rebuild would take.
Corbin, if I go this route, would you be up to letting me pick your brain while I'm in the process of the repair? I pulled it apart earlier to see if there was anything obviously wrong with the turbo, and I don't remember seeing a single rubber o-ring in there.
Jim, you haven't installed your turbo yet have you? is there any way you would know if your rebuild was successful?

Are you sure you are not just backing up your oil return line? Mine was and started spitting oil out both sides of the shaft, visible in the intake piping off the compressor, and caused a lot of smoke out the exhaust.

that is possible but not likely. I have it tapped about 1 inch from the top of the pan, and used a very large 90 degree angle plumbing elbow with a bulkhead nut on the inside of the pan. my drain hose does have to snake a bit over and behind the lower water hard line in front of the block, but nothing major. I have a hard time believing that it has to be a PERFECT straight drain line from the turbo. it can't be that finicky.

The oil drain just has to slope downwards for its entire length. It should be a 3/8" or 1/2" line. When my turbo went bad, it spit oil out of the compressor outlet and that circulated through all the pipe (by BOV would barf oil). There would also be a drip of oil on the compressor inlet.

Nope, not really. Looks good to me on the bench. There was pretty bad shaft play when I got it. Turned out that one of the bearings was pretty worn. Other than that, the seal for the compressor housing wasn't quite right. After the rebuild, the shaft play is minimal. Hope it stays together for a while....but yeah, I haven't installed it yet.
