a custom kit assembled by yourself would be cheaper, but i agree, MANY headaches will occur. if you get a custom kit from a shop, it's more expensive than the kits online b/c they have to design it etc etc. it's not that hard to install, just bolt this here, wire that there. installation was included in my setup b/c they had to design it and that meant fitting the parts etc, so there was no point for them not to install it, all included in the big-ass price. either way, that was about the difference between my custom setup and an hrc setup w/ comprable add-ons (tuning, fmic etc).
get an a/f guage, and i've heard egt guages are a must too, but i have no $ at this point so i haven't gotten one yet. only blew one gasket so far, lol.
and you can pick up t3t4 tubos for 500+...there's a 12second talon where i live that has a green turbo (1200+ for just the turbine)...it's just much easier to get the kit online than assemble one yourself, but if u're up for a challange i say go for it. if i could afford to have lots of down time and had the patience and time to spend working on it, i think it'd be a great project to turbo your own car...hope that helps.
ps the a/f guage reads air to fuel ratio of the engine. rich (green) meens a ton of fuel and not so much air, lean (red) means too much air and not enough fuel and stoich (yello) is rite in the middle. you want to run rich to be safe. but not TOO rich or u're acutally lose hp. the egt guage is to measuer exhaust temps, not sure what the levels you want to stay under are, 1600 maybe, i've forgotten...those exhaust gases get REALLY hot when boosting so it's good to keep an eye on them. thats the next guage i think i'll get.
