16016, Basics of turbo???
Posted by xEclipsE RaceRx, Feb-19-02 08:15 AM
My fault if this has been posted before, but just wondering bout turbo. If i got that one Stage II kit from turbogs.com would it be all that hard to install by myself? Or is it better to bring it to sumbody? I dont even know where I could bring it, but I would like to do it myself, cuz you kno that man bonding you get with yur car...$2799 is a lot for a whole kit, what could I get with just the T3 turbo charger. Anyone know how much just the turbo charger cost? And I know there has to be more to get than just the turbo charger, but I dont know what, like what gauges and shiet. I know I just have to learn more bout this. I feel so slow in my GS. On more question how much HP at the wheel could I expect with just the turbo charger? Anything to beat a all stock GST, see thats what I mean would it just be cheaper to find a GST eclipse or esi t talon? I got so many questions, I think I just have to search the forum better, but any help from you guys is greatly appreciated.

if you dont wanna spend that much cash, look around for a used kit. i got my stg 2 with extras for pretty cheap--2600. look around. i dont suggest you install it your self unless you really know what your doin maybe get some help with some people off the forum that might live near you or sumthin. you deffinatly dont want to go with a complete custom job because it will jes cause you more headaches and you really dont no what to do so jes save up for an hrc or star kit and have the peace of mind that all is(if installed correctly) well . jes my advice. anyways going custom wouldnt save you THAT much money.

hope this answeres some of your turbo questions...

What about all those added gauges you get, which ones would i need, and how do you read them. Like the air/fuel gauge what do you do with it and what do you do with all the other gauges?

a custom kit assembled by yourself would be cheaper, but i agree, MANY headaches will occur. if you get a custom kit from a shop, it's more expensive than the kits online b/c they have to design it etc etc. it's not that hard to install, just bolt this here, wire that there. installation was included in my setup b/c they had to design it and that meant fitting the parts etc, so there was no point for them not to install it, all included in the big-ass price. either way, that was about the difference between my custom setup and an hrc setup w/ comprable add-ons (tuning, fmic etc).

get an a/f guage, and i've heard egt guages are a must too, but i have no $ at this point so i haven't gotten one yet. only blew one gasket so far, lol.

and you can pick up t3t4 tubos for 500+...there's a 12second talon where i live that has a green turbo (1200+ for just the turbine)...it's just much easier to get the kit online than assemble one yourself, but if u're up for a challange i say go for it. if i could afford to have lots of down time and had the patience and time to spend working on it, i think it'd be a great project to turbo your own car...hope that helps.

ps the a/f guage reads air to fuel ratio of the engine. rich (green) meens a ton of fuel and not so much air, lean (red) means too much air and not enough fuel and stoich (yello) is rite in the middle. you want to run rich to be safe. but not TOO rich or u're acutally lose hp. the egt guage is to measuer exhaust temps, not sure what the levels you want to stay under are, 1600 maybe, i've forgotten...those exhaust gases get REALLY hot when boosting so it's good to keep an eye on them. thats the next guage i think i'll get.

You shoul probably hang around before you go buying stuff because you dont sound like you could do too much of the install by yourself....

A/F gauge... if you floor it and you run lean (not enough fuel) than kaboom. A turbo pushes more air through and so you need more fuel, not enough fuel, kaboom.

Boost gauge..... ummm shows pressure

EGT - how hot the air is comin out or ur engine... run too hot and ur shit starts melting

CoO, Thanx guys, Im grabbin on this gradually. But yea I wont be buyin anything soon at all, I'll probably be goin turbo sumtime next year. No money now, just savin up for CAI. I just want to learn this stuff real good so i can hold my own coversation at school with the turbo guys and know what Im doin whenever I do stuff to my car. I just read the HAHN site and they said they give you everything you need when you buy the stage I kit. Instructions on how to install it yurself with about 10 hours of work. I know I would have to get a bunch of guys over to help me cuz it took my ass an hour just to install hood lights (yes I know rice), but yea I agree I think it would be a great project car just to work on.

Go buy a copy of Maximum Boost by Corky Bell from your local book store. It covers the basics of a turbo and I would suggest reading this before you purchase a turbo.

"Oh yea and when you said kaboom" He was talking about your A/F Ratio if that runs lean (not enough fuel) the engine will start to run too hot which will create detonation. Detonation is commonly referred to as spark knock or ping. In the combustion chamber of a spark-ignition engine, an uncontrolled second explosion (after the spark occurs at the spark plug), with sponeous combustion of the remaing compressed air/fuel mixture. You will hear a pinging, or knocking sound coming from the engine when detonation occurs. Running lean and causing detonation without getting it fixed fast, and really fast the engine will eventually go kaboom meaning its just going to shit it self and blow.

You understand?

Go read that book you will understand allot more about a turbo.
