if you can get it to work your fuel AND your spark, I would do that. buy what you can afford.

I think the gen 7 has a faster processor, which makes for more accurate fuel delivery. The programing software is also windows based, and the gen 7 can control up to 3 stages of nitrous. there are also a lot of user friendly things like an available wideband o2 sensor, and other sensors that also were availabe for the gen 6. as far as I know, the gen 7 still cannot control multiple coil ignitions (DIS).

We currently have the Gen VI. HRC is still testing with the Gen VII. You could always buy one elsewhere and try to do the legwork yourself, but it will be a lot of legwork and you will need some patience.
