#10649, "exhaust setup for turbo A420??"

Here is the background of my car: HRC stage 2 kit with large FMIC, 8psi of boost, and automatic.
1st option, custom made 3" downpipe, test pipe, 3" piping and 3" thermal mufflur.
2nd option, same as 1st one but keep the stock cat.
3rd option, just get a aftermarket cat back for GST and live with it.
4th option, you name it.
plz post your opion and suggustion, any input will help.
which setup will give me better performance?
Will the 1st setup make my turbo spool up slower, becouse lack of back pressure. I have an a/t and off the line is slow engouh which setup will make it faster off the line?

i posted a similar question at http://63.99.108.81/dcforum/DCForumID32/748.html

the bigger piping should actually help spool up, but will likely shift the power band a lil higher.

im leaning towards 3" exhaust with no cat...still debating b/t 2.5" or 3" dp tho

anyone have thought on what size dp is best? what about exhaust, is 3" the way to go? im going to be running 8-10lbs

Go 3 inch everything for the most HP if you are turbo. If you have emissions testing, get a 3in cat, if not use the 3 inch test pipe! emoji

Hey Ryan....

you can't believe as much debating I had done with myself in determing which size to go with ...either 2.5 or 3?

In the end, after combing throught the dsm.org archives, it was settled that 2.5 exhaust can get you in the 12's and beyond and the 3 in exhaust for beyond that. Moreover, I figured since a hefty part of my pawer band still is n/a with low boost,a big turbo and high compression, I might as well go for something somewhere in the realm of compromise.

In the end, I don't think you could go wrong with either. I wouldn't bash my brains in with either choice. The 2.5 exhaust does nicely go over my rear axle. I've heard that you may have to go under the axle with a 3" exhaust.

It really does depend on your ultimate goals, but yes a 3" will sit lower on a fwd due to its routing changing. bigger is always better in turbo world, but I wonder how a large exhaust would do with an auto tranny considering the loss of low end before spoolup? Large exhaust=faster spoolup but less torque before spoolup.

3" will prolly be LOUD. I heard a gs-t with one and it was loud and i didn't like the sound, and i think it had a t-25 which spools really quick and the turbo does a good job of damping the sound. Just some insight i guess, that's only one situation.

Yeah I am debating the same topic too. I initially was going to get a pace setter cat back and get a different muffler welded on to it. That is stans and Jasons set up I think. Now I am thinking about geting the 3". I think I will prolly go the economical way though and get the pace setter. I dont know I cant decide.
