I came upon this thread late, but ALL my dyno runs (3 different dyno's and 3 different styles of dyno's) have been done in 3rd gear.
Terry is correct (Terry you handled your responses with tact and a very calm demeanor. I'm guessing you're not feeling well).
The most accurate dyno can be argued for years, BUT the reason for dyno's is self comparison. Comparison of your previous set-up to the changes/adjustments that you've made. Though I find it kinda fun to compare to others, it's gotta be apples to apples.
My favorite dyno is the dynajet with SAE factoring. I was able to go back to this dyno a month later and come up with almost the exact same number that I had previously (I then tuned my set-up using the safc and cam gear adjustment). I also did a partial tune on a "mustang" dyno and then transfered over to the dynajet with SAE factoring and my base run started off at the same number that I left the Mustang dyno on.
My opinion on the pacs, eh, I'll hold off on Captain Caveman
