just because a guy from the dealership says that, dosent mean its true lots of those peole havnt the slighest clue, or know only a lil bit. trust me, go look at a 4g63 mitsu engine, it sits higher and the cams come much higher than the VC. if it was designed for crashes, they probably would have centered it, or made it all the way across, and the eclipse is the only car i have even seen with a bulge like that, much less a one sided bulge. the fact is its made to go over the 4g63 cams. the reason the 2gnt's have the hump is because it was cheaper to make all the same hoods for all the same eclipses rather than 2 diff models, plus everything body wise is interchangable. reason their not on the 3g eclipses, no more 4g63. its replaced with the SOHC 4g64 spyder engine, cams are still on the right but the VC is actually higher up than the cams and covers. no clearance probs, no need for bump, tho i think they still should have kept it. it may have been a little saftey goody realized later, but it was designed primarily to clear the 4g63 cams.
