33775, bump on the hood?
Posted by 95rsEnDeR, Nov-07-02 01:38 PM
I never really thought about it but as i look under the hood of my car I dont really see any reason for the bump being there, It might be close to my battery without it but I think it would fit, is it a turbo thing or what, cuz If not I think It'd be clean to get a carbon fiber hood withought the bump

the "bump" is the infamous styling feature on the eclipse/talon dsm family. ive had soo many people ask me...."dood is the for the turbo???" im sure many of you have heard that too.

the bump is actually only used for turbo/4g63 eclipse / talons to fit the cam gears under the hood, the bump is of no use on a 2gnt

yea, its for the cam gears on the 4g63 because lots of things are reversed. the intake is on the left and the cam gears are on the right. plus its a sign of the eclipse, well isnt for the new ones. its different, and unique. i can tell an eclipse a mile away just cuz of the lil glare it makes.

mitsubishi motors marketed it as "the power bulge" :rolleyes

The bulge is only useful on the 1G DSMs with the 4G63. The 2G DSMs will clear the cam gears no problem without the bump.
We have a deeper engine bay.

I like the saying I saw somewhere: "The bulge on the hood's just like the bulge in my pants. It's there to show it has balls!" LMAO that is a good one imo.

your right the bump on the 2GNT is to clear the battery it is really tight fit. That's what my uncle told me. It is an eclipse thing also but not anymore the 3G killed the tradition so it's not really an eclipse haha! On the turbos its for the timing belt cover I think since the engine is the other way around.

NOPE, the bump is a safety feature, know this because i talked to the guys at Mitsu, and i was in a wreck. it made it so that the hood is easier to buckled under pressure instead of go through the windshield, etc. i have pics if ya want to prove it. there's also other cars that have this feature also, older ones. although, it does look good:)

just because a guy from the dealership says that, dosent mean its true lots of those peole havnt the slighest clue, or know only a lil bit. trust me, go look at a 4g63 mitsu engine, it sits higher and the cams come much higher than the VC. if it was designed for crashes, they probably would have centered it, or made it all the way across, and the eclipse is the only car i have even seen with a bulge like that, much less a one sided bulge. the fact is its made to go over the 4g63 cams. the reason the 2gnt's have the hump is because it was cheaper to make all the same hoods for all the same eclipses rather than 2 diff models, plus everything body wise is interchangable. reason their not on the 3g eclipses, no more 4g63. its replaced with the SOHC 4g64 spyder engine, cams are still on the right but the VC is actually higher up than the cams and covers. no clearance probs, no need for bump, tho i think they still should have kept it. it may have been a little saftey goody realized later, but it was designed primarily to clear the 4g63 cams.

Just glad they decided to only do one side of the hood rather than both I ve tried to imagine it with both, but I think they could have added some type of venting on the bulge to allow cool air into the engine compartment

the next time i see another car with the hump i'll try to find out what type of car it is, i've seen a few. and if the 4g63 needs that hump to clear everything, then how come they have no problem getting an aftermarket one without it?

can someone please tell me what these aftermarket hoods say??? please?

this was says you must choose between turbo and non turbo

http://www.nipponpower.com/bodykit/fghood/aerogear_fg_hood.html

the only aftermarket hoods available for a turbo besides the good hood, which still you must purchase an specially made TURBO one. are these.

http://www.speedpeople.com/cart/details.cfm?ItemID=1618&ItemCode=101018&return=http://www.speedpeople.com

why???? because they are OEM hoods and they have the hump to clear the cams.

hmm....still don't believe it. my brother has a turbo talon, it doesn't stick up to the point that it would need the hump, who knows, maybe it is just for style. but i've seen plenty of 4g63 guys with different types of hood, without the bump in it

Isn't there a bump on the same side of the dodge shadows as well?

I thought that I remembered seeing a couple with the bulge there as well.

Here's the story I heard from a friend...probably bullshit, but here goes...

During testing of the 1G Eclipse (like before selling) the car was parked near a tree and the tree was hit and fell on the hood of the Eclipse (passenger side). The designers liked the way the hood on the drivers side popped up they gave it some style and curves, and WHABAM! There's our hoods...I never thought this was true, but it's a possibility. :)
