I didn't want to whore up or steal the other post.

Does anyone know how much heat exchanger core(oil/trans cooler) one should use when going to W2A? I have a big Spearco W2A that is jut getting dusty I've thought about shoving on. I DONT wanna be heat soaked driving around . So would two 15"x7"x.75" do the trick? Mounted up front ofcourse.

.75" thick? Absolutely not. An intercooler is more effecient the thicker it goes. .75 is tiny. I would suggest keeping the stock side mount until you can do a nice FMIC upgrade. The little one would heat soak quite fast, especially with spirited driving.

That would just be the heat exchangers. They sell them up to 4" thick I think. Being a water to air swap I thought the transfer rate was better. I'm gonna look in the turbo bible and see if Bell give a formula or some kinda reference.

Okay, what are you going to be using it for? Charged air from the turbo? I need more info.

The intercooler core is something like 10.125"x9"4" with 3" in and out. I'd shoot for a 2-3gal reserve tank. Maybe a cheapo bildge pump but I'm gonna check with the SYTY guys on the pump.

The way it works is while under boost you don't want the liquid to make a complete loop. The system soaks the heat and then gets rid of it on its own time. If the tank is too small then you get heat soak during your run. If the heat exchangers(not I/C) are not large enough then the system may not cool off.

What is in question is the coolers for the liquid itself. I want to use an oil/trans cooler or two. I know if the coolers are too small then the intercooler become heated and heats the air more than cools it. For drag racing I guess one wouldn't even need the exchanger as you could just dump the tank and fill with new ice water.

Oil cooler trasnsmission coolers aren't too high priced but I just wanna know the biggest I can fit will be enough. And do I really need a thick core. I don't wanna impeed the radators air flow.

Is this intercooler just for drag racing, or for daily driving? Water to air intercoolers won't do much for a daily driven car as they heat soak almost immediately, especially when the reserve tank is in the engine bay.

Its to be a driver. Not daily but I'd like it to be able.

The tank will be in the rear compartment of the car.

How are you planning on keeping the water cool?

The heat exchanger would be to keep it cool. Small radaitor or large oil coolers.
I read last night on turbonetics site that 260 square inchs is a good target for a street car. And a tank capable of holding 12lbs of ice is common for the track.

water to air needs to be cold not cool i believe. Doesnt the stock intercooler just channel the air through metal slocts to be cooled by the passing air? i.e. no liquid in the intercooler

Yes, the stock setup is air to air.
There are factory turbo vechiles that did use a W2A setup though.

I got that off turbonetics site.
