I have never seen nor heard about that (and obviously it was old). I'm guessing the friction of the denser air slowed him down. The general concensus, when I was in the business of dealing with this, was that the most speed you would attain in a free fall (not headlong tucked or spread eagled with batwings) was 180mph. So he would actually slow down when he hit the denser part of the atmosphere (it also looks like he has a smaller "slow down" shute come out first). What I was wondering was, what about the friction heating him up? Was it offset by the surrounding temps?
I'm sure that others on here have a better understanding, but imagine the balls it took to make that jump. Not really sure what would happen as you push off. Damn. Captain Caveman
