he had an oxygen mask. he WAS nearly out of earth's atmosphere, definitely not a lot of air up there ;-)
impressive though, my question is how did the parachutes withstand the force of opening at the speed of sound. unless he slowed himself down somehow.

I have never seen nor heard about that (and obviously it was old). I'm guessing the friction of the denser air slowed him down. The general concensus, when I was in the business of dealing with this, was that the most speed you would attain in a free fall (not headlong tucked or spread eagled with batwings) was 180mph. So he would actually slow down when he hit the denser part of the atmosphere (it also looks like he has a smaller "slow down" shute come out first). What I was wondering was, what about the friction heating him up? Was it offset by the surrounding temps?
I'm sure that others on here have a better understanding, but imagine the balls it took to make that jump. Not really sure what would happen as you push off. Damn.

if it is what i am thinking of (army filters so i can't watch it) then he jumped from the upper atmosphere in a pressurized suit. one of his gloves failed so he had frostbite and pressure issues. but yeah, like the above stated, the lack of density in that part of the atmosphere allows for greater speeds to be achieved. kind of like when we did all our x-plane test back in the day. launch from upward of 30-40K ft then let the rocket motors hull it up to the upper atmosphere so there's less drag. all physics. cool shit!

At first I was thinking to myself "how could he hit the speed of sound when terminal velocity is much lower than that?". Upon watching the rest of the video I realize how this was the case. The lack of a drag coefficient allowed him to reach speeds far exceeding the normal speed we know of terminal velocity in our atmosphere. I looked it up in wikipedia for more information. Is it f***ed up if I found that pretty good reading? Funny, what we always thought was terminal velocity in a spread eagle fall was actually terminal velocity in a tuck. Pretty cool stuff. Especially when this was done way back in 1960 and it apparently hasn't been played with since.
Hmm, I wonder if I can fill up some balloons with helium; I know I got a chair and............
