I just changed my brake pades on my 96' eclipse RS and now I'm getting a strange smell. I think it's brake fule, but I really don't know. Is this common, and what should I do?

I changed my brake pads last month and I never got a smell, so I dont think it is normal. What does it smell like??

I think it's brake fluid, but I'm really not sure. A friend of mine told me to take the brake fuel cap off when changing the brakes. Is that important. Also, I haven't changed my brake fluid. She seems to be runnin' fine, and the smell isn't bad, I just happened to notice it a little.
