#47566, "CAI Installed, RPM Question???"

I just upgraded from short ram to CAI, (e-bay cold air intake piping with a huge K&N cone filter) when I took my car for a test drive, I noticed during acceleration my RPMs are lower with the CAI compared from before when I only have the short ram intake, I was accelerating to 90-95 mph and when I shifted to 5th the RPM was only on 3000-3600. Normally I would be on 4000 rpm on 80 mph. Is this normal or do I have a problem? Any help would be so appreciated. Thanks in advance guys.

Well that would tell me the CAI is doing it job. You are making power faster then before, and therfore getting up to speed quicker. Just my theory anyway.

Ummmm there is no way a CAI can change your gear ratios.

^^^exactly

You will be at the same rpms at 80mph, your gear ratio is exactly the same. The difference you are seeing is all in your head!

I always make things more simple than they really are huh? The point is there is nothing wrong with your car. Your car may sound or feel a bit different, creating the illusion that something has changed. There is nothing wrong with your car.

optimus, that guy on dsmtuners was the guy trying to rag on me for telling him he was wrong. unless you are automatic and started using your O/D (and you are a 5speed) or have the final drive mod or replaced you gears, there should be no way it's different.

i thought it lowered top speed shortening the gears? like having a closer gear ratio? i guess it's not enough of a difference to mess with the speedometer. oh well.

Yup ^^^^, your gear ratio is set in stone, it certainly is not going to change no matter what you do unless you put in another transmission. It's all in your head man .... I thought the same thing until someone explained it to me. Welcome to the club.
