#3121, "Aftermarket timing belt/water pump ok???"

I have a friend with a 96 GS and he hasnt done very many mods to it at all cause he is kinda strapped for cash. he is at about 75k miles and he wants to change the timing belt. when i rebuilt the engine, they used an OEM timing belt to go back on there, but it costs like 85 dollars, and the water pump is a little over 90. now compare that to an aftermarket timing belt being like 30 dollars and the same for the water pump, he would like to go that way. are the aftermarket ones bad? any bad experiences with them? i would think they would be just as good if not better than what Mitsu would put in there. thanks for any info.

Haven't used a water pump but I've used non-dealer type timing belts before. I used one on my Eclipse as well as other cars and never have had any probs.

hehe..my dad just informed me that he used a timing belt.water pump from the local car parts store, advanced auto, when they were rebuilding my car..so i guess ill find out too! i honestly think if anything it should be better, not worse. the local dealer wanted 111 bucks for a timing belt!! DOH!! i was amazed.
