If it lowers your compression ratio, then you'll likely lose power. When you get that turbo kit, though, you'll be able to send a lot more boost into that motor than before and therefore be able to make much more power than you would without that bottom end kit.

depends what turbo kit etc u get... if u get the 8.6 compression for sure you will be slower till you slap that turbo on... for example, stock internals with a hrc stage 2 kit 8-9psi max, build bottom end with the lower compression you will be able to go past 9psi if you upgrade your injectors and anything around 13-15psi u will need to retard timing... lets just say, built engine 8.6 compression, turbo, injectors and ignition 15psi no problem if tuned ...

hey vert5, do you have a follow up for this thread yet? i plan on doing a rebuild with the howell bottom end kit and when you said "this should be a fun install" i am just assuming that you plan on doing it yourself. i am curious as to how easy it is for someone with minimal experience (but good mechanical skills) to accomplish a job like this.

9.6:1 is stock
and 1 point is 4% drop not 1 tenth
meaning fromm 9.6 to 8.6 not 9.6 to 9.5 or even 8.6 to 8.5.

building a bottom end isn't easy at all. there's a whole trade dedicated to this feild. engine builders are not the same as a regular joe shmoe mechanic. if your gonna do it yourself get some books on the matter

My car is slower than a stock geo metro if I blow off an intercooler connector and can't get boost to build, or it feels like that atleast. I woudnt wanna be running lower compression pistons for long without a turbo kit...

Super20, what compression are you running? What could happen to my engine if I run lowcomp. for an extended period of time?

It won't be bad for your car to run lower compression for an extended period of time, but it might be bad for your ego. Like Super20g said, 8.6:1 compression with no boost makes you SLOW!!
