the shift kits I have seen my dad install in cars he is rebuilding trannies for consist of: a new seperator plate for the valve body, drilling certain spots in the valve body with a supplied drill bit. Drilling holes into the shift solenoids, etc. These sometimes do crazy things on electronically controlled transmissions. They work pretty good with older, vaccum controlled transmissions, but not really nice with the new stuff in a lot of cases. There was a truck with a built 350 in it. Bored/stroked, the works. We rebuild a new tranny and gave him high performance everything. The old tranny couldn't be rebuilt b/c the shit was broken in 2. That was a bitch to pull out too from what the guy that did it said. Anyways, my dad test drove it to check it out. We road test everything to check for irregularities. This thing was quick. It spun off, and then hit 2nd with a nice spin. Had shaved tail lights and corvette tails in a molded in roll pan. The truck was for sale, but he wouldn't buy it. He needed a new car, but said he'd get in trouble with something like that. I was hoping he'd get it so I could have a fun thing to drive around some too. Anyhow, shift kits are risky, they work good on some cars, but sometimes make the tranny shift real rough, can cause the hard parts to break more frequently, burn up clutches, bands, etc, and can even cause it to skip a gear. Just be prepared to pay for another valve body if it sucks.
