Second advancing you're timing can help power especially if you are using higher octane gas, which burns slower, so you start the combustions sooner but it lasts longer putting more force on the piston for a long period of time creating more power. Can you go too far with this? Yes, it's called detonation, when the main part of teh combustion is occuring when the piston is still on it's way up. You can have really nasty things happen like... oh I don't know... holes in your pistons. But done within reason and safely you add power.
