2701, Adjustable Cam Questions
Posted by Dame_Flamez, Jun-03-01 03:43 PM
When buying adjustable cam gears... what kind of HP gains can be expected? Also, how much torque am I looking at losing and also what other negative effects come from advancing or retarding the timing?

Thanks
Damien

I don't know exactly about power bands effects, but if I remember I think properly tuned you should gain like 5hp at the wheels. I was actually looking into the weigh saving advantages of them. Even unadjusted Unorhtodox advertises as being lighten and I'm pretty sure that the AEM are also lighter than stock, so there should be minimal advantages there. I think a couple people have had then on the dyno... I usually screw this up but I think the best settings on a mostly stock motor is advange intake 2 degree and retard exhaust 2 degree...

Doesnt advancing your timing hurt the car?

First of all. Thanks Oracle!!!

Second advancing you're timing can help power especially if you are using higher octane gas, which burns slower, so you start the combustions sooner but it lasts longer putting more force on the piston for a long period of time creating more power. Can you go too far with this? Yes, it's called detonation, when the main part of teh combustion is occuring when the piston is still on it's way up. You can have really nasty things happen like... oh I don't know... holes in your pistons. But done within reason and safely you add power.

Oh yeah. I think just about everybody here who has cam gears runs that setting. You'd have to go a lot farther to even start to see knocking. And I don't think you'd gain any power so there really isn't a point.

Thanks for all the help guys... just one more question though... is it true that if you replace your stock ECU with an aftermarket one (Jet, etc.), that you should leave your timing alone and not alter it because of potential dangers to your engine?

Thanks again
