My diff is almost finished with the testing and modification that Super20G is having setup for us. This is a similar design to the Phantom grip but is made right there with your differential so there are not production problems. I haven't seen it yet but I asked Carlton, who's doing the work, to weld the pin and he told me this.
"In addition to making the limited slip for you, I am also going to drill and
pin, a second time, and locktite your cross pin for the "idler" gears, as
the Eclipse is not a press fit and Brad tells me that they are notorious for
coming apart. After fooling with it, I can see why. It is a slide fit with
much tolerance and only one pin to holdin place, a small one."
He also had this to say about the unit.
"The unit in your diff is working perfectly.
Here is what I propose, if you have another week or so. We are maching
another of higher grade metal and I will then do the other work to complete
it. I would prefer sending that over this prototype.
I have another question for you. I have set the unit up to require 70# of
torque in order to slip. If I set up more than this, it is most likely
going to noticably fight you in turns. It might help to know how you are
going to use your car. If it is just drag racing, you will be limited by
the inherent strength of the diff. Although I am going to add an additional
keeper shear pin in the case, which will help immensely in my opinion, it is
still not meant for too many bonzai off the lines so to speak. Most drag
cars have entirely built drivelines, even in the higher ET brackets, for
example. I feel that many units may have failed on Eclipse type setupps due
to the loose fit of the spyder gear shaft, which we are addressing, but this
won't cure the entire problem of inherent strength.
If you are looking for good steering, good cornering and autocross and
acceleration charactistics, I think we are there.
