25117, Differential Pin

Who has had there diff pin's welded in?? I can't afford the Quafie right now so I'm gonna go ahead and weld the diff pin in and go ahead and install the gold springs in my phantom grip. I'll have an exspirenced welder do the work. Or is a good mechanic that can also weld needed? What is all involved in this?? Is it just the pin welded in place?? Sounds easy. right?

It IS easy .. this is all you need to do:

yep that's what I thought ;-) Now is there anything else I have to go out and buy? either from the dealer or an auto parts store? I know I'm gonna need tranny fluid, locktite thread sealer, and Locktite 518 gasket maker to button up the tranny. but do I need new cone bearings? output shaft bearing?

Not unless you break something either taking it apart or trying to get it back together.

Is it just me or is that gear plastic :wary

It's plastic. it's just the speedo gear, there is no real stress on it since the gear it turns is plastic as well..

So do we have to take the entire trans apart to get at the diff? How important is it to weld that pin?

my tranny nuked itself when the pin came out.

Knowing about this problem now, if you ever have a very strange problem where you get a loud crunchy noise from the transmission, put it in neutral and have it towed to a dealer. Not knowing about this weakness led me to continue to try driving the car, which caused the broken parts to cause considerably more damage inside the tranny.

Question though. Are there any possible downsides to welding in the pin?

Other than the fact you have to machine the welds off to get the pin out (to remove the spider gears if you ever want to install a phantom grip or locker unit) not really, no.

Very easy job, DSBLK93GT and I(mainly him) welded my differential as well.

My diff is almost finished with the testing and modification that Super20G is having setup for us. This is a similar design to the Phantom grip but is made right there with your differential so there are not production problems. I haven't seen it yet but I asked Carlton, who's doing the work, to weld the pin and he told me this.

"In addition to making the limited slip for you, I am also going to drill and
pin, a second time, and locktite your cross pin for the "idler" gears, as
the Eclipse is not a press fit and Brad tells me that they are notorious for
coming apart. After fooling with it, I can see why. It is a slide fit with
much tolerance and only one pin to holdin place, a small one."

He also had this to say about the unit.

"The unit in your diff is working perfectly.
Here is what I propose, if you have another week or so. We are maching
another of higher grade metal and I will then do the other work to complete
it. I would prefer sending that over this prototype.

I have another question for you. I have set the unit up to require 70# of
torque in order to slip. If I set up more than this, it is most likely
going to noticably fight you in turns. It might help to know how you are
going to use your car. If it is just drag racing, you will be limited by
the inherent strength of the diff. Although I am going to add an additional
keeper shear pin in the case, which will help immensely in my opinion, it is
still not meant for too many bonzai off the lines so to speak. Most drag
cars have entirely built drivelines, even in the higher ET brackets, for
example. I feel that many units may have failed on Eclipse type setupps due
to the loose fit of the spyder gear shaft, which we are addressing, but this
won't cure the entire problem of inherent strength.

If you are looking for good steering, good cornering and autocross and
acceleration charactistics, I think we are there.

Let me know,
Carlton"

He should be done soon and then we'll see what happens with the tranny situation at that point! ;-)

Kyle,

Is there any indication what this fella will charge for this setup?

Is this going to be a situation where you would send in a stock differential and he would mod it appropriately or he sends you a "kit" for modification of your differental?

Thanks!
