Ouch! 90 degrees off can't be good. I don't know what's wrong with your engine, but a few years ago my tensioner pulley shat out on me. Without knowing that at the time, I tried to start the car, as well as the mechanic that I took it to repeatedly attempting to start it, without doing any internal damage. I don't know how far off my timing was, probably nowhere near that. Time to crack her open.

Been there, done that.

I had both tensioner and idler bearings fail on a freeway doing 65. The car just lost power and stalled. I left it coasting in gear for at least 10 seconds, and when I stopped I tried to start it because I still didnt know what was going on. Ended up having not one bent valve after taking the head off to check it all out. New headgasket, timing belt and components, all back together.

Easiest way to see if you're screwed is to reset/fix the timing and do a compression test.

sometimes just pulling the valve cover will show you if there's any carnage (loose rockers, gouges in the cam lobes)

Best and easiest step is exactly that, reset the timing, do a compression check, and hope no valves hit.

If the valves didn't hit and compression is fine then just put on a new tensioner, tensioner pulley, and idler pulley to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Actually, put those on when you reset the timing as you'll be in there anyway, and even if the valves need replacing you're going to need a new tensioner and such anyway, so might as well put them on now.
