If you're really worried about the heater core, bypass it by disconnecting both hoses from the firewall, and clamping them both to a 4" section of metal pipe. But it's not the heater core.
This is just for toubleshooting. It basically bypasses the core so you can narrow stuff down. You will have no heat for defrost or anything if you do this.
