#115866, "wiring for tach install on 96 eclipse..."

Now, before everybody goes ballistic on me here, I should letcha know up front that I've spent the past two days and prolly 8 hours trying to find a wiring diagram for a 96 na eclipse...

My car doesn't have a tach, so I bought an aftermarket one, and for the life of me I can't figure out where to clip the damn lead. Now, I'm pretty new to DSMs, so it took me 2 hours to figure out where the ECU in my car was...

however, I haven't found any one page on the web, or anywhere else, that breaks down tach instalation shotgun style.

I've tried installing it on pins 73, 6, 8... I'm not sure if I'm in the right spot though because a lot of the diagrams don't really match up to what I'm looking at...

any help (photos= teh good, I'm just a simple jarhead here folks)is much appreciated.

Just fyi, NOT all 2g eclipses came with tachs. On the 95 and 96 RS's a tach was an option. In mine and a few people I know we did not have one but as far as the aftermarket tach install, the wires should be behind the black plastic cutout where the stock tach would normally be.

to answer your question boss, the wire u need to run it is the WHITE WIRE . its around the middle of your wiring harness, just remove the cover and go to work. if ya dont know were its at, its under the hood in front of the battery, silver thing, with black cover covering wires.

and your right, most super base models eclipse didnt include a tach, common in the 95-96,

hope this helped you, now you can get some sleep emoji

Nope, wrong again!!

It was not an option on the RS, rather in 96, the only year, there was a base model below the RS, in which it DID NOT come with a tach. My friend if you have no factory tach, then you have exactly what I have, a 96 Eclipse (base model). If you do a carfax it will report 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse. Nothing else, becasue thats all that it is. The RS's say RS the GST's say GST blah blah blah.

But, the good thing is your actually about 60 lbs lighter then that RS emoji

What works, order a tach (an RS or GS) from the dealer and screw it in where the tach is supposed to be. Yes it's that simple. No wiring just screw it in.

This *DOES* work, I did it to my 96 Eclipse (base model, not RS). I'd suggest getting a cluster from Ebay or somewhere other than the dealer though, the dealer here in Texas quoted me $150 for the tach.

Tallahasse is 126 shipped with DSM discount.
Should be cheaper on ebay or if someone is selling a whole cluster, good luck.

Hope your wite wire on the ECU works, mine didn't and I had to get the Autometer Tach Adapter to get it to work. Anyways, for those who are curious, here is a pic of the big black ring that us "lucky" ones have.

Damn...I have been lucky. Over the years, I have owned probably 20 Eclipses and I didn't realize there was a base beneath the RS. That instrument cluster is as bad as it gets.
