#113690, "Serious questions about Evo swap..."

ive been seriously looking into doing an evo motor swap in the GS for a few reasons, mainly being just different... im just looking to get a good discussion started on whats required and some helpful thoughts... also keep in mind.. i am working with Vineet on this (the man who built the twin engine talon) so... ive researched this as much as i can.. so any imput or things i may be missing are welcome cause hey 2000 heads are better than one.

Strip the engine bay, completely.
ECU
wiring harness (with extra wiring for any adjustment)
A good welder for custom mounts, piping, etc.
Wiring diagrams so you are able to either splice into stock gauges and interior wiring, plus make sure you get it all wired in right.
Custom throttle cable (probably), maybe custom trans linkage as well.
Custom driveshaft, or maybe HUB swap.
^ All depends on what trans you plan on using.
There's a matter of rolling diameter on your tires and speedometer calibrations.

And the number one thing: patience
You thought you've had downtime before...

if i remember correctly, they put the cam gears on the pass side for the evo like ours so maybe the driveshaft is on the same side as ours. that would solve that issue. but then again youd still have motor mounts and well...everything else required for a 2g 4g63 engine swap.

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.
If you want it cheap and good, it's not going to be fast.

Yes and no- the drivetrain would be easier if the recipient car was an AWD, but the mounts in the engine bay are more compatable from the 420a then the US Spec 4G63. Then again, the wiring would be a bitch.
<shrug>

Someone try it and let us know. Mmmkay?

remember you need an evo IV and up, you will have to use the transmission because the engine spins counterclockwise. the wiring won't be that bad if you use the evo wiring to run the engine, and splice the guages, etc. into the stock harness. for the axles the GST axles will work if you use the GST brakes. You will still probably have to make all of the mounts but I think it will be a lot more simple than swaping a US/cyborg 4g63.

My crazy idea was to adapt the Evo driveline to a 420a, using an adaptor plate, custom clutch, whatever halfshafts fit, and putting the Evo rear diff in the GSX rear diff case. Ah well, it would have been cool. I guess I coul race in reverse, though...

LMAO! I would love to see a Eclipse kick some honda ass in reverse! Holy shit that would be so funny.

Well back to the topic...
A guy took a EVO IV motor and drivetrain and swapped it into a 2001 Hyundai Accent so I believe you can do this with your 2gnt. It took the guy 2 years to complete but it was well worth it. Just take your time and post lots and lots of pic emoji.

Well, we were discussing the later Evo motor that is mounted like our trusty 420a.

fwiw... I know David Buschur, and the CRX he built had over $15,000 just in the chassis... and still was a major beyatch to keep straight down the track.

420a and ej20... much boost by both

A cool idea for a swap would be a mitsubishi FTO MIVEC V6 engine swapped into a 420a, then turbo it. mivec is kinda like vtec without the rice.

I am against engine swaps. Unless its a honda. Those are easy. But why even waste your time and money? If you want to be different paint your car pink with purple polka dots. This reminds me of the infamous "Can i put a 4g63 in my GS/RS?"
