"The answers to all your questions lie within the search button..."
But here's the rundown for all interested, I too was an ignorant newb at one point in time and had asked myself the same question but eventually decided to chance it and now have had 2 diff neon blocks in my car along with another 2GNT bottom end.
After spendin a lil time searching myself and not finding anything like this I decided to list everything in one area with all the explanations so theres something available to all the future search button users.
The similiarities and differences between ours and the the 2.0L cloud cars (Neon,Stratus,Breeze, ect.) are as follows:
Block: in it's bare form and ready to be rebuilt is identical, casting numbers are the same, only serial numbers differ due to dates mannufactured.
Crank: same as above from everything that I've taken apart and put back together.
Rods: all the same for the most part and are interchangable. Only diff was some of the early ones that had a diff style bearing lock for whatever reason. Get the right year bearings for those year rods and you'll be fine. (for the stockers)
Pistons: as far as I know the 2GNT had the same pistons for all years produced. Neons on the other hand had diff ones for SOHC and DOHC motors. These are generally the flat-top ones and are used to make up for the differences in the shapes of the combustion chambers.
Head: This one should be obviouse. If you cant see this then a wrench in your hands is a dangerous thing. Step back, put it down, take a deep breath, and realize that you need to search some more. As a last resort, call a tow truck and take it to someone that does know what they're doin.
Oil pan: These are different, you must use a 2GNT oil pan in our car or get really creative with your exhaust. The oil pickups are also different in height. You should use the pickup tube that was with the pan, there should be about a 1/4 gap between the pickup and the bottom of the inside of the pan to work in all conditions. Take your chances but don't come cryin when you starve your motor.
As for everything on the outside: dipstick tube is different, lower coolant tube from the radiator is different, timing tensioner assembly's are different (mechanical, hydraulic, and the routing), front breather on some models wich is easily fixed as stated above. The Crank sensor is in the same location on the 2.0L block, but the sensors may be different, compair the plug, but swap it out just to be safe.
I've also seen some slight variations with the oil pumps, use yours for your car and your fine. Crank pully/dampener can vary, so use yours, along with your timing gear on your crankshaft snout. If you start out with a neon motor, strip it down to a bare crank and block, throw everything away, and put it back together with parts listed for your car. You will have the same motor that will bolt up to everything in there and never have to ask the question "will it fit" again. If I missed anything then anybody may feel free to add or correct.
Oh, and one other thing... SEARCH! Creative thinking? Ingenuity? Hell, It's just an obsession!
