106390, neon block Posted by spooled420, Oct-03-07 11:35 AM
hey Ive been looking for a new 420a motor since ive overboosted the last one and they all seem to be about 600 bucks or more for high milage engines so I was wondering if I could just use a neon dohc block or sohc block, are the internals gonna be able to handle boost?Ive heard the rt neon has a 420a in it anyways but will I have to relocate anything for swapping this block in or is it a direct bolt in,just reshearching before I plan?thanks for any info on this.

Both blocks will work. The SOHC is a little lower comp and if you get an early year SOHC, you will need to plug up the block breathers (I'm running one in my NA right now and I just used freeze plugs).
BUT you will still have the same limitations as with our stocker. Not forged pistons, higher comp than people in general want, and a question about how strong your used piston and rings are.
I would recommend getting a lower end and getting some forged pistons put in. Though that may not be in your budget, I would wonder if you could keep her at 6-8psi and be happy.
Also, this has a little of the turbo questions in it. Let me know if you want me to move this into the turbo section. May get some more turbo specific answers there.

well thats good news because theres plenty of neons in town,if im not mistaken isnt the sensors in different locations as the eclipse 420a and what head gasket should i use eclipse or neon or does it matter?as for boost im running 6 psi at the moment and i got a 8 psi spring ill install in the wastegate once i get other projects out of the way.Another question, will the neon motor bolt directly to my transmission?and what do you meen by blocking the breathers?

transaxles are the same with the exception of the final drive ratio. both are NV-T350 transaxles

and my talons sensors/powersteering pump/alternator...ect will bolt directly to the neon motor since everything is reversed?and could I use the breeze, cirrus, stratus, avenger block if they dont have a neon at the wrecking yard?sorry for all the questions I just dont want to run into a problem doing this install.

Yes!
Hey that was easy. As for the breather block off, the 95 SOHC (I believe. You will need to SEARCH :cheers the site for the specifics) has two holes in the block in front for a crankcase breather system they use. You would need to block off these two holes (or make your own breather). I used a couple of freeze plugs to block the holes off.

I got a 95 neon block i am using, just do like stated above and block off the breather holes with freeze plugs and bolt everything easy. They are the same block besides the breather system.

nothing on the block is in reverse the HEAD is the difference not the block

What part of "Any 95-99 is the same block." did you not get?

For the record the Neon trans is not the same with ther exception of the final drive ratio. Early NEon trannys used a .72 5th gear as well as the 3.55 final ratio. Shift levers used an E clip to secure the shifter cables. The bellhousing in a Neon trans is a cable style so the entire bellhousing is useless to a 2GNT. See the main page for details as they varied from year to year.

just got my block the other day now saving for head gasket and timing belt but for the record so far I had to change the oil pan/oil pick up tube/ my original dip stick seems too long and the neon dipstick wouldnt be accurate with my original oil pan....hope i dont run into any other surprises on this build up haha.

WOW... Just to be sure you swaped the tube and the pan from YOUR motor right? You will need to swap the oil dipstick tube from yours too. They are different. Just remember everything except the metal will have to be swaped over from yours, all sensors too... etc.

"The answers to all your questions lie within the search button..."
But here's the rundown for all interested, I too was an ignorant newb at one point in time and had asked myself the same question but eventually decided to chance it and now have had 2 diff neon blocks in my car along with another 2GNT bottom end.
After spendin a lil time searching myself and not finding anything like this I decided to list everything in one area with all the explanations so theres something available to all the future search button users.
The similiarities and differences between ours and the the 2.0L cloud cars (Neon,Stratus,Breeze, ect.) are as follows:
Block: in it's bare form and ready to be rebuilt is identical, casting numbers are the same, only serial numbers differ due to dates mannufactured.
Crank: same as above from everything that I've taken apart and put back together.
Rods: all the same for the most part and are interchangable. Only diff was some of the early ones that had a diff style bearing lock for whatever reason. Get the right year bearings for those year rods and you'll be fine. (for the stockers)
Pistons: as far as I know the 2GNT had the same pistons for all years produced. Neons on the other hand had diff ones for SOHC and DOHC motors. These are generally the flat-top ones and are used to make up for the differences in the shapes of the combustion chambers.
Head: This one should be obviouse. If you cant see this then a wrench in your hands is a dangerous thing. Step back, put it down, take a deep breath, and realize that you need to search some more. As a last resort, call a tow truck and take it to someone that does know what they're doin.
Oil pan: These are different, you must use a 2GNT oil pan in our car or get really creative with your exhaust. The oil pickups are also different in height. You should use the pickup tube that was with the pan, there should be about a 1/4 gap between the pickup and the bottom of the inside of the pan to work in all conditions. Take your chances but don't come cryin when you starve your motor.
As for everything on the outside: dipstick tube is different, lower coolant tube from the radiator is different, timing tensioner assembly's are different (mechanical, hydraulic, and the routing), front breather on some models wich is easily fixed as stated above. The Crank sensor is in the same location on the 2.0L block, but the sensors may be different, compair the plug, but swap it out just to be safe.
I've also seen some slight variations with the oil pumps, use yours for your car and your fine. Crank pully/dampener can vary, so use yours, along with your timing gear on your crankshaft snout. If you start out with a neon motor, strip it down to a bare crank and block, throw everything away, and put it back together with parts listed for your car. You will have the same motor that will bolt up to everything in there and never have to ask the question "will it fit" again. If I missed anything then anybody may feel free to add or correct.
Oh, and one other thing... SEARCH! :bash

Not quite. See previous page for breathers and you will need different main bearings for the 95. Locating tangs on the bearings are different.

my appologies to all... I see that I put that under the rods instead. thanks for the correction.
