Curious info;
On the dyno, I did a check of filter vs non filter. On the two runs, I showed a gain of 3whp with a filter on. Hmm. That could make sense. The ram air intake had a bigger pipe than my throttlebody opening thus allowing the air to gain velocity and "line up" as in a velocity stack concept. OK, I'll work with that.
Go to the track and find my times were better with the filter off vs filter on, that day.
My guess would be the key is intake temps. At the dyno, all I have is a fan pushing air at the front of my car. Without a filter, it is harder for the air to travel up to the TB opening. With the ram filter the pick up is much closer to the air flow.
At the track, with my 1/2 radiator set-up etc., it is easier for the exterior air to be forced up to the TB opening (as opposed to taking hot air off the engine). While the ram air would act as a bit of a restrictor. Eh, it's a theory. It could also be just an anomoly.
BUT at any rate, what I see from the filter location is that you will be picking up warmer air from the engine as opposed to the cooler exterior air. Either way, we are not talking about a lot of difference. Just food for thought. Captain Caveman
