Ok, this one is different from the conventional cai/sri threads. I was thinking how nice it would be to totally delete the piping all together to get some engine bay room, so I mounted the cone filter from my short ram intake directly on my throttle body. What is everyone's thought on this? I'm not really looking for more power from it just more room, it shouldn't be too bad since my short ram intake was sucking hot air directly from the exhaust manifold anyways correct? All opinions are welcome, thanks in advance.

Wow, you found room back by your tb for a cone filter? I don't think it will hurt anything. Less power, but as you said that's not really a concern of yours.

you'll probably have to custom order the filter since most of the conical filters com in a 3" flange and our TB is approx 2.5" flange. look up the size at k&n.com and take the part # to your local parts monkey and you should be ok

Yes, I have it, sorry I haven't replied quicker. I was working on my tranny swap lately. My setup basically looks like the picture posted above, I can't tell you any gains/losses because the car isn't running yet, should be soon though. :)

I would suspect it effects the power band not unlike a short runner intake manifold - just to a lesser degree. There will be less accleration of the intake charge before it reaches the combustion chamber, so low end torque stands to suffer, but I doubt it's going to be all kind of noticeable.

Then again, I'm pretty sure I've read Joe say that his car feels pathetic without the turbo on it. That's not saying much, but it's saying something.

Pull the fatty weather strip at the rear of the hood to encourage some fresh air to flow into the engine bay back there by the filter. The base of the windshield is a high pressure area, so losing that strip gives air a place to go at speed.

a filter right off the TB isnt a great idea, your low end should be pretty weak, if you are feeling crazy drill a 3'' hole in your hood and run piping out of it and stick a filter on the end of that, I saw a guy in a fuckus doin that at a auto-x last year.

Curious info;

On the dyno, I did a check of filter vs non filter. On the two runs, I showed a gain of 3whp with a filter on. Hmm. That could make sense. The ram air intake had a bigger pipe than my throttlebody opening thus allowing the air to gain velocity and "line up" as in a velocity stack concept. OK, I'll work with that.

Go to the track and find my times were better with the filter off vs filter on, that day.

My guess would be the key is intake temps. At the dyno, all I have is a fan pushing air at the front of my car. Without a filter, it is harder for the air to travel up to the TB opening. With the ram filter the pick up is much closer to the air flow.

At the track, with my 1/2 radiator set-up etc., it is easier for the exterior air to be forced up to the TB opening (as opposed to taking hot air off the engine). While the ram air would act as a bit of a restrictor. Eh, it's a theory. It could also be just an anomoly.

BUT at any rate, what I see from the filter location is that you will be picking up warmer air from the engine as opposed to the cooler exterior air. Either way, we are not talking about a lot of difference. Just food for thought.

what is that cap on the header for. i have that same header but i have no clue what thats for. its right next to the O2 sensor

Well since my car is running I'll give you the results of my cone filter on throttle body test. Honestly I can't tell you whether I gained or loss anything since my car is quicker regardless after the mtx swap. I WILL tell you what I have noticed though, contrary to what people have said about heat, intake pipe length etc. I beg to differ, I've noticed slightly quicker throttle response and the car sounds mean as hell (sounds like nothing but motor with no artificial intake pipe sound). Also I took the weather stripping off as Brian has mentioned and that helped with heat issue. Eventually I am going to test this with a larger throttle body and see what results I get.

So in a nutshell:

-I can't tell you any difference in acceleration/passing power because my car is quicker after the swap anyways.
-I DID notice a more "rev happy" engine (slightly that is, nothing huge)
-Removing the weather stripping helped out with the temps SOME.

and can you loose the EGR or do you have to be smoged?
i yanked mine after i got pissed that it torched one of my wire harnesses, course in Nebraska you dont have any emission testing so ive never looked back

Hmmm. I need to buy some heat wrap, thanks for the reminder. :thumbsup

P.S. How hard would it be to wrap it, once the header is already on? :shrug

It shouldn't be that bad, if you are going to wrap the pipes individually it might be tricky IMO

We have emissions here but I really do want to take it off, it is probably the worst emissions device found on a car. I'll have to check the North Carolina inspection specs.
