#5770, "1st and 2nd shaft serviceable?"

I tore up my mate gear to the diff ring gear. I was looking at the disc service manual and they have written all over that this shaft assembly is not serviceable. It's not cast this way so obviously it can be taken apart . Does anyone know the ramifications of those actions? Is it all a press fit set-up? It sure does look like I can just press off that end gear.

Also, on the 4g63's (and other tranny's) there are little things like ball bearings that drop out and roll away when you take off certain things. Any time bombs that can be headed off before I take her down would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
MB

you will have to press it apart, first time breaking the seal is difficult and can be a violent snap as it lets go. be careful. Nothing will drop out and roll away as long as the shaft doesnt fall to the floor. You cant buy just the shaft though.

Great Terry, thanks. Just as I expected. Just one more question; do I have to work from the opposite side of that shaft to get to the gear or can I just pop it off from the gear side? My old man eyes are having trouble seeing if there is a shoulder there or if it is part of the gear. Oddly my sevice manual doesn't show an exploded view.

Thanks,

MB

You will have to work from 5th gear towards the 1st gear. thee will be 3 clips to remove. a set of snap ring pliers work but can be tricky because the slip. There is a set of pliers specific to these type of clips if you know any trans techs, they will have them. Its like a snap ring without the holes. Or if you want to but 1 set of pliers they are about 50.00 from snap on.

Cool, thanks Terry. I think I know the clips you are talking about. I can normally get them with my snap ring pliers. Just annoying to get out.
