Exactly how important is that the paper/form gasket between the master cylinder and the firewall be replaced when replacing the master cylinder?

That's what I figured, but just wanted to make sure it doesn't serve some secret service that would screw up something. I already replaced the master cylinder using the old gasket and just was double checking after hte fact. Thanks for your input.

I replaced mine last summer, and have been gasket-less w/ NO problems.
