Unfortunately, internal mods put me into that everyone-knows-what-they're-doing-but-you class too. While I can't share any insight from personal experience, I believe I can explain why a softer setting is better up front on a FWD platform. You want the drive wheels to be as pliable as possible (within reason, of course) to allow them to stay planted all the time. A stiffer rear end encourages it to want to step out (not that it's easy with a FWD unless you're on the eBrake) and it's a way to dial out some of the understeer. Fortunately for me, I've met the local tech guy and he said he would let me run in whatever the stock class was unless I started eating people up. I think you have to run in a novice class until you win something like three races, then you go into whatever class you tech for. Something to think about. When you go early, there are veterans there who can go out with you to walk the course or make practice runs to give you some coaching too. Do it, Greg!
hopefully they will allow me to stay in the novice class since im just starting out but only time will tell. my first test and tune should be early may or june.
