I tried to follow the zeroing out procedure you spelled out. I wasn't exactly sure if I did it right so I tried it the other way again with marking the gears. A couple more tries and I got them lined up exactly as per the OEM gears. Maybe I just wasn't patient enough the first time. I've changed the timing belt previously with the engine in the car and it seemed way easier than with the engine out and accessible. Maybe its a mental thing.

Thanks for the heads up though. Nothing like learning the old fashioned way.
