1) no, dont run just one coil. 2) you are correct abou the power part..you will only get about half the rated power 3) doubling the power only raises the maximum possible SPL by 3db..hardly noticable to most people. 4) run the coils in series (total of 8ohms). if you run each coil off of a channel, you risk introducing non-linearities into the driver. running it in mono eliminates this. 5) you can try running it in 2ohm, but the amp overheat (as already stated). if so you can back down on the gain, but you would be at almost the same SPL output as if you ran it correctly in the first place. 6) upping the power wire does nothing for an overheating problem. well, unless the cable is overheating.
