Short answer: no.
back in the day a lot of big subs were very poorly built, and they would use the same motor assemblys. because of all the new problems introduced by a 15" cone, the 10" or 12" motors could no longer handle it and as a result you got sloppy bass as a result of the greater cone weight and so on so forth. you can get lots of subs that have been specifically designed as a 15" which has a lot of advantages in that, since all the factors associated with having a greatly increased cone area & weight are taken care of and compensated for, you will get all the sound quality back that people seem to think you lose going to a 15. and unfortunately the laws of sound (or physics) state that the more displacement a sub has (cone area X excursion) the louder it will get. so given a 15" and a 12" on equal power with equal excursion, the 15" will always be louder just because of the greater cone area. not to mention most 15" have more excursion & power handling then their 12" counterparts, there is just more SPL potential from a 15" driver then there is from a 12" driver usually. and if you want to apply all that, explain to me why Eclipse makes their flagship sub, the Titanium Pro, only in 15" and 18" sizes? It definitely is not an SPL only sub, I heard one and it was probably one of the cleanest sounding subs I've heard in some time. JL Audio W7 13.5" has more excursion and 250 watts more power handling then the 12" W7, and it will get a hell of a lot louder and lower. its a common misconception that 15" suck.
