129719, problem with my gas tank
Posted by dalesmitsu, Feb-22-10 05:19 AM
early this morning I put five bucks in my car. It filled up for abit until it reach three bucks, tank sounded like it was about full but it really isn't. Then all of sudden gas started spraying out of the tank. Like it's full or there's something blocking it, went to check my guage it reads quarter of tank. This is the second time this happend, when I bought the 2g it had a half tank. What could be the problem, this is the first for me. Has anyone had similar situation.

I've had it where the dispenser didn't agree with the gas tank and thought it was full before the tank was, but it did't spill out on the Talon. It has been a while, and my Eclipse hasn't seen anything other than a gas can with me (not licensed yet).

The 83 Regal I had did what you are describing, sound full and start gushing out.... I had to pump at a slower rate to prevent the overflowing.

Or, could your gauge be off?

Check the filler pipe for pinches, and that somebody didn't shorten it between the cap and first bend.

If those look good, there may be an obstruction in the pipe, which is kinda hard to happen.

I'll check it out, didn't think about that.

Problem with your EVAP system. Possibly stuck vent valve.

Thanks, mike I'll look into this. You might talking about the fuel cut off valve.

Weird thing is I don't have a cel on. I went to autozone an asked to have them scan my. They told me it wouldn't show any codes if there's No cel light on. I looked in my haynes book and if the evap faulty it would kick out code 31. When turn the key to the on position, Cel does come on for a few seconds then shuts off.

I'll look in my chiltons for more information the haynes only cover basics.

Checked them awhile ago, it looks good. I'll check the underneath in the morning.

Did some reading on the Evap system. It mentioned the fuel tank filler neck could crack from overtightening the gas cap. Wow, this is new to me didn't know. It also, says a poor seal or loose gas cap can cause the evap system to loose pressure and though a CEL.

I'll check it for cracks and it could very well be my gas cap, it does look beat.

To reach this evap system would I have to drop the gas tank or is it next to the fuel filter-fuel pump(below the rear seat).

The EVAP system is just that, a system, not a single part. I am by no means an expert on this, but I know on 98 and newer models there is a charcoal canister, a fuel vent valve, a rollover valve, and at least one more EVAP canister up front behind the passenger side front bumper vent.

I am not sure which (if any) of those components would cause the issue you are seeing, but if you are not throwing a CEL for gross or small EVAP system leak, then I would assume your EVAP system is operating correctly.

My guess is that this has more to do with the filler neck area.

I went bought a new cap, pocketscan and a compression tester last night. It did the same thing this afternoon, tanker driver at the station told me same thing Mike, valve might be clooged. When I came back home put it under the scan. Well, good news there's No codes but still doesn't solve this problem.
I'm thinking it could one of four things.

1. filler neck area( checked it out its fine) ???
2. fuel pump ( I hear prime but sometimes I don't) lines might be bad.
3. clogged valve ( fuel cut off valve-next to fuel pump)
4. fuel pressure regulator( could need a test done) or Pressurize it underneath the hood.

I'm going to call a shop up the road see what they have to say and I'll report back hear.

News: shop told me it could a bearing down inside is clogged or corrided in the filler neck. He said it would be about a hundred in labor to drop the tank and check it out, that's not bad. I'm going to bring it tommorrow, he's back up at the moment.

Here's their site for those who stop in my area. http://www.underwoodautocare.com/ I've drove pass it for years, never checked it out till now.

I had a similar problem with an El Camino I had. The rubber gasket had come off the gas cap and was stuck in like a backwash in the filler tube. The harder I pumped the worse it would throw the gas back out at me. I took a garden hose (flexible) and beat the gasket down into the tank and filled up.

My reward for my effort was now that when I drove, the gasket would suck over into the gas pick up and starve me into a stall. Ultimitely I had to drop the tank and go in to retrieve the gasket.

My gas cap still has the gasket on it, I went an replaced it anyway.

I'll know what happend tommorrow afternoon.

I'm wondering if I relieve the fuel pressure near the tb if that would solve it. I do recall the previous owner had maintence paperwork of the head rebuilt. I know the head remachined has nothing to do with my little problem, if there was I would've caught it with the scan tool.

went to the shop, they can't look at my car till Monday due to our snow storm. Tech. labor would be about hundred and to replace the filler neck that could be two to three hundred.

Found this video a guy had similar problem, I think

Is this the Air vent you've told me about.

Fuel pressure has slim to no coincidence of filling a fuel tank.

More than likely its an issue with the evap system. Probably a stuck closed vent valve or like that youtube video, its clogged up. I honestly do not even know where our vent is, but seeing that you are in ohio, maybe ice got up in the vent line?

eek :eek ice. I might have a fuel treatment somewhere in my big box of stuff. I'll toss that in tank, breakup the buildup.

You could be talking about the evap. canister. Thought about that also read up on it in my chiltons. Doesn't say anything in there how or what causes back spray.

The fuel vent valve is located under the car in front of the gas tank. It is fairly easy to access and change.

Check out this link and scroll down about halfway. There is a diagram of the evap system and the fuel vent valve is pictured as part numer 05611H:

The fuel inlet will vent naturally into the fuel nozzle. thats the reason the EPA has those wonderful fuel vapor recovery nozzles.

Have you checked to see if the gas tank is actually full? I know its a hard concept to accept but the fuel floats can stick or go bad!

No, I haven't removed the fuel pump. Both the gauge and pump do work.

Autozone rep. that owns a DSM told me it could the flap inside preventing it from filling the filler neck would need replaced. My relative also said the mesh thing the prevents people from stealing gas is corrided or bunched up clogging the filler.

The technican at the shop I went to today said it could about two to three hundred to replace it, plus the labor.

Here's a picture of my evap system from jnztuning oem.

This could help you to help me with this problem I'm having.

Here's the part name injunction with number.

1) Vapor canister 2) Vapor canister Bracket 3) Check valve
4) Egr valve 5) Egr tube 6) Valve Air shut off
7) Hose To air cleaner 8) Hose To aspirator

I was also told it would throw code if my canister was full,or a evaporative purge solenoid/system failure. But recommend that their could a brokem or crack somewhere in the vaccum system under the hood. I'm not throwing any codes, according to my obdII pocket scan.

There was some pressure suction when tossed in some fuel treatment, it could've unclogged it. I haven't tempted filling up after.

Where is the vapor canister, check valve located at. I know where the egr is at, could be next to the batter along the firewall.

I'm supposed to take it in the morning. But, I would like to fix it myself.

I believe the vapor canister, or charcoal canister is located under the car near the front of the gas tank. If you get under the car and look in front of the gas tank towards the passenger side of the car you should be able to see it. The fuel vent valve is up there as well, just closer to the centerline of the car.

Checked it this afternoon, you're right. That's where it's at next to the fuel filter also. I must say age has took toll on it, rust corrided. Would you risk buying this part at a junkyard, my local fox auto, is very reasonable on prices. So far they have 420a parts I needed, and could get for 50 bucks or less. Sould get it from Satan they want 250 new Oe part from jnztuning new.

update:
Had back spray twice tonight, both times I pumped with nozzle half way out worked for abit then I got pissed on. I also heard alot of air rushing through the filler neck.

I did some searching on the web found the oem vapor canister for 222 from parts.com. Though I'd share my find, on to you and save you a few bucks.

If anyone know another oem site that beats this price. Post it up or pm me.

Tell me what signals the ECU checks to determine a charcoal canister fault code, and I can fab up a $5 solution with logic and a PICAXE.

I get ECU codes when I scanned the obd-II port. I didn't do they key dance for codes either, since my scan isnt showing any codes. Only problem is valve cover gasket needs changed, atx filter fluid also needs changed

My gas tanks is just spitting gas back out at me. I was told from a master tech he's 70, that he seen this problem all the time. The problem is the vapor canister is clogged, or vent valve.

I hope its only the canister, I really don't want to drop the tank replace that valve. This is a poor location to gain access to replace it. At least its not doing a popping thing from the evap purge solenoid, I replaced one on my mommy's 01 neon. It stopped after the replacement.

ez, if you know where I can get a new oe vapor canister for less than 222, let me know.

The fuel vent valve costs around $15 from satan and is very easy to change. It does not require dropping the gas tank. The only valve that requires dropping the tank, as it is located on top of it, is the rollover valve.

The fuel vent valve is under the car in front of the gas tank near the centerline of the car.

Called my local satan, price quote for the vapor canister and fuel vent valve. Satan was nice this time, price for both is $140+local tax for pickup. $118 for the canister and $22 for the vent valve.
Its waikem mitsu, for anyone interested. When I called parts dept. was about to close, I'm going to place my order in the morning.

I found this today, good price but I'm concern about the fitment for my 1998 rs atx.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=270536070838&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&ih=017

Would this one fit, on my 1998rs. I notice from my Chilton's or haynes book, picture is abit different. When also, compared to the pic from CAPS part number/MFG. number is different too.

Could the link be the right part but they did across reference and photo was taken from a different angle.

I need to know if this ^^ above would fit. Could someone post up the part number from rockauto, they do carry vapor canisters for chrysler/dodge unsure which one is cross reference for my 1998 rs.

Thanks

Is there a valve inside the filler neck, and I told by the dealer my gas tank problem might be this valve. His price qoute is 6.79

Reason why I'm asking because I don't see it either the haynes or chilton.

There is a little flapper valve that opens as the filler nozzle enters. It springs back closed when removed. As it is at the very top of the filler neck I cant see how this would be causing your problem unless it was dislodged and knocked down into the neck.

I received it the mail to day ship by fedex, no damage to the box and shipped well, very surpised.

This what I'm thinking also, and after looking it over its a cheaper spring load flapper and has a rubber o ring. Description of this part is called fuel filler neck valve.
Cannot see how the parts rep. ordered the wrong I asked for, I told clearly said fuel vent valve.
I'm calling them up in morning, get a return # and have them credit the amount on my card.

Going to order this over the net, price is cheaper.

Would my fuel filter cause this, and I think it would throw a code.

But, there's no codes.

Finaly, got around to checking out my fuel pump and also the filler neck. I have brand spanking new filler neck and neck gasket from jnztuning.com total cost was 107. I'm very pleased with their service and fast ship. It doesn't look too good, I'll be needing a whole new fuel system.

Here's some pics, tell me what you think.

First picture when removed the cover.

:(
The Fuel line with the fitting was PITA to remove and kept me from lifting the pump out. How do I loosing this fitting, I soaked it with wd40 and used two wrenches the mutha wouldn't break loose. So, I sprayed wd40 on the fitting let it set over night. Same for the rest of the fastners.

After, I cleaned up the fuel connector.

Before I called it quits, I've done abit cleaning to the connector and looks much better now.

There was no problems when I depressurized the system, but did notice a better start up.

I soaked the fastners to the filler neck with wd4, talk about rust.
extra pics when I did this, also.

Fatsners to the right and underneath where also sprayed down.

This pic is of the end from the filler neck.

Overall, fuel lines looked decent (except for one)but needs cleaning with tire shine, but from the clamps they do show pinched from them.
