110945, The dreaded CEL - Evap Leak Large Posted by Lit, Jul-19-04 07:08 AM
I have a '99 GS Oz edition. The CEL light has been on for about 3 years now for the Evap Leak Large code (455 i think). Anyway, I finally took it in to get it fixed. $500 later it is fixed (mostly all labor just to diagnose it). For this reason I will never buy another mitsu again. For those that do have it, the problem lies in the valves/hoses above the gas tank leaking emissions. Its common for those plastic valves to crack. You have to drop your gas tank to replace these...2 valves and 7 hoses. Mitsu should be sued for making CEL codes so generic. To spend $500 in labor to diagnose an engine code is ridiculous IMHO. The whole point of the CEL codes is so that doesn't happen and so mechanics can know exactly what went wrong. If it comes on again, I am clipping the damn wire.

:shrug
If it doesn't effect the way the car runs, then i don't care what the code is. I dread no CEL.
As far as dropping the gastank, uh, no... there's an access cover for the fuel level sender under the back seat that would allow you to access the whole tank-side evap system.

well, thats great if you live somewhere were you can pass inspection with the CEL on. In my case however, you can't pass state inspection if its on. Like I said, next time I am just going to cut the damn wire.

so you wont buy a mitsubishi again because you had a cel on for 3 years that meant nothing pretty much since it didnt affect the driveability of your car? thats stupid imo.

why would you clip a wire? just remove the bulb for the CEL or run a wire to a switch and solder it to the CEL bulb so you can turn the switch on or off to disable the CEL bulb for inspections.

i fear no CEL....i actually get worried if its not on. when inspection time comes around i just yank out the bulb and go on my merry way.

I have a 99 with a small EVAP leak at the gastank too. I hear it every time I do a boost leak test. Best part is when I go to fill up the gas after doing a leak test and I guess one of the check valves sticks open because gas overflows and spills all over the car.

Dino...actually thereis one plastic check valve you dohave to drop the tank for. The access cover will not allow you to reach it. However, i do not see where there are 7 pieces of hose, just one long steel line with a rubber line at each end. I have a gas tank i am looking at now soo.....

I too got a EVAP CEL for a small leak. P0447 or something like that. Anyone got pics of this valve and hose...I forgot my Chiltons back in Califronia, and Dino (Houston was it...) is too far of a drive from Midland, TX. Maybe next year they will place me in Austin for clinicals where I can finally party with Dino and them.

If you are boosted, and have the EVAP Grose leak CEL, it is caused by a plastic valve under the car, right between the gas tank and spare tire well. Right smack dab in the middle of the two, you can't miss it. It has at least 3 or 4 lines going into it, has a round top, and roundish body. There is a rubber diaphram in this valve, which can rip if it sees boost pressure. In the middle of this diaphram, is a piece of plastic, which provides the anchor for the diaphram, and which makes it move. On the underside of this diaphram, on the plastic shaft, is 4 sharp edged protrusions. Once this valve sees boost, it pushes on the diaphram the wrong way, and makes it go into these sharp edges, and tears the diaphram.
I've already taken my valve out of there, and took it apart, and saw the small rips in the diaphram. The solution is to get a new valve, take the top off of it, and file down these edges. OR, find a good check valve to put inline with the EVAP line at the throttle body. A new valve is around 30 bucks at the dealer.
There is a anti rollover valve on top of the gas tank, which needs to be dropped to reach. If you are getting a gross leak, then it will usually be one or both of these two valves.

Don't know the exact part name for it but its here in the CAPS picture:

Its part: 05611H
Look at the bottom part of picture #3, and you can see where it fits with all the other lines..One line on top, 2 on the sides, and one on the bottom. Its a bitch to get it out, because the rubber lines are like froze to the part..fun stuff. Its there on my 98, so not sure if its a 96+ part or not..Looks like a regulating valve of some nature. The top port on it sees vac from the motor, which if that diaphram is torn, it wont see that vac, so it trips the CEL. With a little research, i can find out exactly what it does, and how it works.

Excellent thread, despite the drama above. Perhaps a generous moderator will remove the antics above and move this to TWSB. I know there are dozens of people with this same CEL (my personal co-pilot of 4+ years now) and this is the most comprehensive discussion I've seen of it yet. Diagrams where to find it, and instructions how to modify it. Excellent. :thumbsup

05611h is not by the gas tank at all. That is up front by the Leak detection pump. Looks liek the purge solinoid but i dont think thats right.
