#56512, "HRC RS goes 11.05 @ 130!"

Route 66 Raceway, Joliet, IL, 9-16-03: The HRC RS Eclipse has reset its own record! We recorded an 11.05 @ 130, with a 1.74 60 foot time, and a 7.24 second 1/8 mile @ 106 MPH. The tens are so close now! A street 2GNT in the tens...can't wait!

Over the last week, the RS has run 11.46, 11.24, 11.20 and 11.05, with a handful of other 11's as we have been tuning out this latest iteration of our little red 'Clipse.

In dyno testing last Sunday, we recorded an eye-popping 505 WHP, just shy of our previous 508 WHP record. This number is even more impressive when one considers that our old HP record came with DFI fuel control...the RS currently is no longer DFI equipped (previously, it was considered a Stage V, now it is our new Stage IV configuration)!

What you are witnessing is the long-awaited completion of our Stage III and Stage IV system iterations. We embarked on this program over two years ago, and much experimentation has occured in that time.

Here's the quick rundown on the car's current setup:

Stage IV Hahn RaceCraft turbosystem, exactly the same as a Stage II FMIC equipped system except for following:
Super 20G-H Turbo
New Stage IV Fuel System
Crane Ignition with Boost Proportional Retard
Crower rods
HRC-JE forged pistons, latest design
HRC-NX Pirahna wet port nitrous system, tunable from 100 to 250 HP (We are currently at the 150 HP level.) Available soon!
Howell Performance 55mm throttle body
New HRC-Clutchmasters rebuildable Stage IV clutch with aluminum flywheel (VERY nice combo, available now!)
Quaife limited slip differential
3.55 final drive ratio
Driveshaft Shop Stage V axles
26 x 10 x 15 M/T slicks on Weld wheels

Total weight with driver: 2800 pounds (let's face it, this ain't no lightweight Civic, but at least you can stand to look at it!)

I must also acknowledge the efforts of the entire HRC crew who helped make this a reality! Special thanks go to my son, Adam, who convinced me to get the car back on the track and performed a HUGE amount of work to help make this happen, and my friend / employee Craig Martinelli, whose help and endless enthusiasm for all things racing infected me big time! And a tip of the hat to Frank of The Driveshaft Shop for empowering me to use those big slicks without fear!

Without nitrous, the car ran 12.08 @ 113 on the Stage IV setup, and 12.72 @ 105 on the Stage III. Information and pricing on both Stages will be provided to you as soon as we complete the process of packaging and costing. For those of you awaiting the DFI Gen VII Stage V configuration, hang in there...after the Stage III and IV development is completed, the Gen VII goes on!

Thanks for all the support, you guys rock,
Bill

holy shizah!!!!!!!!! i want a 10 sec klipse... wanna trade? think of it this way, you'll have a project!

Having Problems? Heres my Three step solution to anything 2gnt related.
Step 1: Put down everything in your hands.
Step 2: Grab a lucky strike, Smoke it.
Step 3: Walk to the fridge, double fist some keystone ice, sit down in the shade, drink one beer, finish cigarette, drink other beer, roll a joint, smoke it, walk back to your problem, and in about 5 minutes the solution will come to you.
If not. Go here: here

If still nothing, your trying to hard. Start over at step 1.

Congratulations to Bill and the whole HRC crew! You're SO close!

I've been waiting to hear from you regarding this (we're all busy, i know how it goes), as Craig told me you were headed back to the track last night to go at it again. I absolutely CANNOT WAIT to see a time in the 10's for this car!

Bill...couple of questions. On the JE pistons what is the "Latest Design"?, why the 3.55 final drive gear and where can we get it?, if we plan on stage IV do we need axles?, Thanks and I can't wait to blow money on this stage IV.

<hijack>

>why the 3.55 final drive gear and where can
>we get it?

The 3.55 final offers taller gearing over stock to take advantage of more power. The stock gears go by really quickly when you're making that kind of wheel HP. It came in the SOHC Neon. Do a search in the Manual Trans section, it's been covered. I did it and I like it.

</hijack>

Carry on..

I'm almost positive he's not using the Cartech. Once again Bill, congrats on your crew's new achievement. Though I've just gotten the sfmu, I am still very intersted in your stage 3 set up vs an E manage, safc or 8 injector set up.

yeah, i'm definately in the market too. i've never really wanted to do the 8 injector setup or a standalone, and i'm going to need injectors larger than 415 cc/min pretty soon.

The latest design revision on the HRC /JE pistons is primarily refinement in terms of skirt proportion and piston weight; they are lighter than ever to reduce strain on wrist pin and con rod, and offer less skirt friction. We decided to put these through torture testing on the RS to see how they hold up under extreme stress....so far, so good! If you order them from us, you get the exact same kit in use on the RS.

Any turbo 2gnt will benefit from axle upgrades if slicks are used. The Driveshaft Shop can counsel as to what will work in a particular application. The ones we have are the baddest they make, and not required for anything under 400 HP. By the way...I do have a set of Stage III axles and hubs that used to be in the car, but were removed to upgrade to the Stage V stuff. Anyone interested? I'm looking for $500 for the set...you will also need new front wheel bearings and a press to install them, or send the knuckles to your local automotive machine shop for this. BTW, the hubs also have the long studs, which can be replaced with short studs if your wheel/lugnut combo needs such (the longer studs are used to make the car NHRA legal with thicker lightweight wheels and mag style lug nuts).

hey HRC good job!!! i'm thrilled that our cars can do so runs with that kind of power with that many mods. but question, what boost was that 11.05 sec run under? did you use nitrous on that run? did you P&P the intake manifold or in designing something that gives you more airflow with out the stock one. that right there will put you in the 10s with just that.

Yes, those runs were with the N20 engaged (check the mods list at the top of this thread for more details).

This is with a non-ported head and manifold, stock cams and valves. We intentionally resisted the urge to upgrade those components in order to show the most with the least. However, we do have a couple of highly modded 2.4 engines left over from our Neon drag race program...one may end up in the car during this winter!

you know, you could fabricate and sell a 2.4 conversion kit for the 2gnt sell it for like $3000 or something for the block with all of the installed goodies and all of the extra stuff like brackets, oil pan, and a new downpipe and call it a "stage VI" system or something and i bet you'd make a lot of money... if you're going to put it in the RS that would be the perfect platform for a 2GNT 2.4 conversion prototype/testbed.

Boost is about 22 PSI.

Launching with the CRANE two-step feature, set @ 5200 RPM. We wired it into the windshield washer switch: I just pull the switch back when I'm staging and hit full throttle, releasing the switch when I launch to move the hand to the shifter QUICKLY (first gear is over fast!). Thanks to Sgt. Craig for this idea...try it, it works awesome (just disconnect the washer pump so you don't look silly on the line!).

And the car ran consecutive 1.72's in 60 foot with 100 octane fuel. The 114 octane we are now running to be safe with the N20 took away a little bottom end power, but we are trying some new tricks this weekend to get the 60 foots back down again and just get the car down the track more effectively...

Til now, the entire suspension on the car has been stock with the exception of Eibach front lowering springs. Now that we have so much power in it, the 'chassis jacking' on launch and upshifts has become very severe, it squats so hard we are losing major chassis effectiveness. Observers have told me the back end of the car jumps up and down like a lowrider with hydros at launch and upshifts!

Phil's, Inc., a seller of suspension products in the Chicago area (check them out for great products and pricing on suspension, brakes, etc.), has agreed to hook us up with a complete set of adjustable KYB AGX struts to combat the squat. In addition, we are installing Avenger rear springs (their higher rate will also keep the rear from diving down so hard), and new slicks are going on, as the existing ones are flat wore out from all the fun we've had lately! If we have time, we are also going to limit the movement of the engine / trans on the stock mounts, as it is also jumping around a lot, making shifting difficult and just further upsetting the car.

Hoping that these mods will get the car in the 10's without having to make more power. If it all goes well, I may even put bigger nitrous jets in it for a 200 shot. Yee haaa!

Anyone know where I might find better engine mounts? I've got the AFX front center solid mount, but we need more control. Also need to replace the springy from control arm bushings...any tips?

Weather will be in the 70's here this weekend, no rain predicted...I can't wait!

Spray It!
Bill Hahn Jr.

What a novel idea

As far as suspension bushings go, Energy Suspension makes a "master set" that includes urethane bushings for every single rubber bushing on the car (and some that aren't!). If you've got a press and a weekend, you can go that route, but you'll hate me for suggesting it. I helped install a set once, it's absolutely no fun.

Prothane makes urethane inserts for the front&rear (no need for the front, or the rear if you've already got it stuffed with an insert) but they also make a set of press-in side MM bushings that i imagine are quite nice.

I think that with a solid front MM, the biggest roll issue becomes the rear MM bracket - it tends to have more flex in it than the insert-packed rear mount. I have broken two of them since i've had my car. If you make a better one, i'll take one

hahaha! I think Craig did get that Avenger idea from Dino...props to the Dark One!

I called our local boneyard and they had like 10 cars there to take the springs off of. Seems like a cheap and easy mod; thanks Dino!

It works well too. I'm not sure if i had them on the car when we met in San Antonio (i beleive so), but i can actually pick myself up on the back of my car, and it'll deflect perhaps half an inch from my weight. I also use KYB AGX struts - on the highest setting, they're pretty darn stiff. Speedbumps are brutal.

See above for my edit and suggestions on MM and suspension bushings.

Even if it is not released, maybe a hint at what the fuel systems limits are. I am looking hard at a DFI Gen 6 as my only option(budget) for my fuel system. I am also shopping for a used Tec 2, but they are still slightly out of my price range.

I would love a setup that was plug and play. 1:1 regulator, high flow 255LPH in tank fuel pump, 660cc or 720cc injector capable and tuned off a FJO wideband(just enter the Air Fuel ratio--vacuum and boost). $1000 shipped(excluding fuel pump).....then I woke up...LOL

Hey I brought up Dino's springs at 66 too

Bill, check Bob Kise for a set of new unworn rear springs, with our 2GNT discount they shouldn't be too much.

Also for engine mounts, Prothane makes some pretty stiff mounts for sides, but the fr/rr inserts I don't like. Look at Deyeme Racing http://www.deyemeracing.com They will fill all mounts with solid hard urathane for $25 each, if you send them the mount.

lol Can you elaborate just a bit on that?? I guess you are meaning to have a mount plat that the bolts go through, and then by "eyelet" you mean a metal tube that the through bolt goes through to mount to the frame support mount plates? If so,then yeah, thats what i had in mind

That's a good design for a motor mount. That's exactly how my rear mount is designed... works great and has held up well. My materials came from McMaster-Carr.

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.

Thanks, all. We did go with the Prothane kit for the car that replaces nearly every bushing BUT the rear motormount...that piece is sold seperately by Prothane, and we got that too. Combined with the AFX solid front mount, the excessive movement we were experiencing has been alleviated.

Now if I could just find a solution for those pesky front lower control arm bushings (the rearmost ones that attach with two bolts) that need to pivot to accomodate the dual balljoints. If no one knows of a solution for those, I may need to fab up something.

Boost It!
Bill
