#8751, "Notchy shifting question"

Hey guys, Just had a question about how well your trans shifts. Mine has always felt a little notchy when changing gears. Had the car for 6 years and this is how it has always felt. When you go to change gears it doesn't fall right into place. The shifter stops right before the gear for like 1/2 sec and then goes right in. The trans doesn't grind any gears and shows no signs of problems. However other cars I have driven dont seem to have this problem. The gears pretty much fall into place with little effort. Its very annoying at the track when trying to shift at 7k and you have to give it a good pull to get it into second. Some times it will grind a little but not usually.

Clutch is releasing all of the way, I do have a short shifter which probably just makes it a lot worse loosing some leverage. Also have bearings in the shift cables and metal bushings in the shift plate. Just thinking about maybe picking up a neon trans and rebuilding this one at the same time if this is not a normal issue.

Fluid from the dealership. I changed it when I got the car at 80k and putting new oil in it this week after removing the tranny for the clutch fork issue. The oil that came out looked very clean

Fair enough. I used to run the Mitsu liquid gold as well, and I know the "notchy" feeling you are talking about. Like you, I also have a short shifter (B&M set at 50% less) which definitely exacerbates the issue.

I switched to Amsoil 5W-30 Synchromesh and I have noticed an improvement over stock. Much smoother shifting.

Something to keep in mind.

I just worry about the syncros with not using stock fluid. Isint aftermarket oil suppose to deterierate the syncros quicker. This is what I have always read on this site. I know some people choose to use other fluid and dont seem to have any problems.

Amsoil fluid is formulated to work with Chrysler NV transmissions. Says it on the back of the container.

To date, never heard of any issues with this particular fluid, only positive feedback.

yup. go here: http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/mtf.aspx and read the 'applications' section.

Chrysler 4874465 is the nv-t350 fluid just below that. matches up.

Just order it direct from their website. After you place your first order, they will put you in touch with a local dealer in your area who can hook you up in the future whenever you need Amsoil products.

I actually think Dave (CODE4) is a dealer. Maybe send him a PM.
