Could be a bad synchro. That is how mine started. When I tried to go from 1st to 2nd, I would get a resistance. After more abuse, I could not shift from 1 - 2 unless I was below 5k RPM. If I tried to I would just grind the shit out the gears. My knowledge of trannies is also very limited, but just speaking from my experience.
