#46397, "New Chevy purchase HELP!! "

Alright, I hate car dealers (new or used). BUT I'm married sooooo, I gotta try to purchase one of these new Convertable Camaro's......oh how I fucking hate car salesmen

Anyway, anybody got a "friendly" who can help me out with buying one of these pieces of crap? I've got no friends that I know of who are car salesmen (because, of course, how could I like them, lol?).

Can anybody help me out with any of their little tricks so I can bring the price to a reasonable amount (instead of buying the "car underay/undercoating" that you don't need for another $500)? I can play hardball in the used car market, but I got no defense in the new car market (because I don't buy new cars because.......I hate car salesmen).

Yes, I know I shouldn't buy first year cars. Yes, I know I'm setting myslef up for a screwing by buying a car that there are so few available. But you read the part where I said I was married right?

I did some research and came up with a "sticker" price. But I don't know if I can work that any. Also, the stealership wants to put a $3000 "delivery fee" on top of that. What the fvck is that about?

So, I'm looking for a little information because information is power.

Thanks for any help,

MB

New car dealerships don't budge much on price but typical negotiation techniques are always worth noting.

Time is on your side (unless your wife thinks different) so be patient and persistent with them. Dealerships like to move inventory even if they are not making money.

I think I read somewhere that dealerships standard markup was 15-20% of what they bought it from the manufacturer for. So keep that in mind when negotiating price. A $25,000 car will not be able to get more than $3750-$5000 off without the dealership losing money. Realistically, I don't see you getting more than $2000 off unless you are really good and/or the dealership is desperate (I don't think dealerships are having trouble selling Camaro's now though)

Shop many dealerships and try to convince the dealership where you are at that somewhere else has got a better deal. My brother-in law would even say all kinds of things were wrong with a particular car even though he really didn't know just to get the seller worried that the true value was less than what they are selling it for. (Although this won't work at a new car dealeship because they don't have problems)

It is important that you convince the other person/dealership that the car has less value than what they are selling it for.

It is well-known around the world that Americans don't have any patience when it comes to negotiating. Foreign negotiators use this to their advantage. So when at the dealership, don't rush into a deal and expect for it to be a week long or more process. Time will force the dealership to want to make a sale.

Talk less and be quiet when negotiating price as it makes the other person look for words to say. To take words from Dave Ramsey, just say "that's not good enough" and be quiet and let them try to talk you into it. The awkward silence will make them try to find ways to compell you to buy.

Like you said, knowledge is power so learn everything you can about Camaro pricing, options, disadvantages, advantages, and etc. on the car

If you are buying in cash it will give you an edge, and if you are financing I recommend using traditional bank auto loans instead of dealership financing. Dealerships make most of their money on financing and extra options like (unnecessary rust-proofing)

Anyway, good luck! Sorry if I ranted a bit, negotiations are interesting to me and a big part of my job is to negotiate federal government contracts.

Assuming this isn't an April Fools... I agree the Japanese have it down w/ using silence in negotiations, and don't use the dealership's financing if at all possible (get prequalified at your own bank). You'll never get a good deal unless you're willing to walk away.

Props to Dave Ramsey, a smart guy

This.

All dealership financing departments charge an extra 1-2% on top of the rate that they actually approve you for and roll that into the profit of the deal. Many times they may sell the car for "cost" and add in an extra 2% intrest to the financing to make the money back on the back end.

I lol'ed on that one. Yeah, me, buying a new car. Buying a new Chevrolet. Yeah, I can see April fools all over this. But, alas, tis true. Its what the wife wants.

And Nick, all good info (of which I subscribe to. I especially like to use the "speak little" strategy. Apparently, I have some kind of strange ass look to my face that people tell me is intimidating. Hmm, go figger, but I try to use it to my advantage). Though I was not aware of the percentages. Appreciate.

Unfortunately, my biggest leverage point (at least to me), time, is not on my side. You remember the part about the wife wanting it.......need I say more?

As for financing, I won't do it. If I can't afford it cash, then I can't afford it period (not that I'm wealthy or any kind of crap. On the contrary, I'd say that half you guys on here make more than I do). Makes my credit score really premo, but that doesn't really matter becasue I don't use it, lol.

Appreciate the help so far guys.

Go in there tell them you want to buy a car with CASH, and whats the best they can do on the sticker price. Also mention that you are waiting on OTHER dealers to give you a qoute, Making them fight for your money. Leave them with your phone number, Tell them to call you when they are done punching their numbers together. Walk out, and don't say a word.

This plus everything else.

Mark, don't forget to tick them for the few miles that are on whatever they have to offer. Believe it or not, 500 miles on the OD of a new car can sum up to $2-3k off the sticker price. The miles are usually on there after manufacturer testing and transportation, however, there are also people who test drive the car, and you can NEVER be sure as to how much they romped on the engine. The richer you look, the longer they let you go on the test for, and sometimes even let you take it over night. Especially with a newer sports cars.

Remember, they really want your cash. REALLY want it. Regardless of the economy, new car salesmen are greedy. They swim in the same pool as lawyers, man. Keep that in mind and go in there with the brass of a man who's gone 13's (soon to be 12's) in a N/A 2G and I think you'll be fine. Good luck!

Having sold cars at one point and having several friends that are currently car salespeople with verified souls, I take offense to this statement.

Well, done deal. Thanks for all the input. Finally found a "friendly" who was able to give me a straight deal. This was never about getting the cheapest deal possible. It was about getting an honest and fair deal. I wasn't into taking them to the cleaners, but I wanted to have some shirts left over to clean.

For informations sake, the e-mail thing didn't work. I ended up with one actual quote on 7 sent out (I figured I'd start with seven). The rest of the responses to my request were just fishing for information from me and lies. As soon as they found out I was standing my ground on them having enough information to give me a quote, they just kinda withered away.

So in about 2 months, I'll have a big, bright, shiney yellow convertible sitting in my driveway. Whoop-dy-do and a waste of money too.
